Demographics

Due to the relative magical stability of the area, combined the aggressive efforts of the Southern Church to root out "unnatural" influences, the city's population is almost entirely human. Even the population of milliget and Boemerezh is comparatively small compared to similarly sized cities.   The gender ratio is generally even, favouring males. With Drudic and other religions officially banned, the Faith dominates religion in the city.

Government

The city is run by the Count of Poitiers, who is also traditionally the Duke of Aquitania. A seneschal administers the day to day operations on their behalf.   The Bishop of Poitiers also holds a great deal of temporal power in the city and county, and is one of the wealthiest individuals in Bedouar.

Defences

  • Situated on a high promontory and surrounded on 3 sides be rives, Poitiers is naturally defensible, aided by the construction of a large trench on the 4th side and a fortified wall.
  • A castle straddles the wall on the western side, a central donjon protected by 4 smaller square towers.

Industry & Trade

The city collects tolls from passing caravans and skyships and has a large agricultural presence, feeding much of the region. The surrounding rivers are dotted with mills.

Infrastructure

Poitiers is still serviced by the Remusan Aqueducts, granting fresh running water to the city. Its defensive position has allowed it to develop robust farms and gardens, making it one of the largest producers of food in the region.

Assets

The capital of Aquitania, Poitiers has grown wealthy in both the secular and religious communities. The royal family has become a patron of the arts and education, with numerous schools of learning and artisanal training making their home in the city.

Guilds and Factions

  • The Merchantmen maintain a small office in Poitiers.
  • The Southern Church is a major presence here, as is the Inquisitorial Order of Albi.

History

  • Poitiers was a major city of The Remusan Empire , sporting numerous amphitheaters, baths and villas, serviced by three massive arched aqueducts. The area marked a contentious struggle between the earlier followers of the Southern Church and the indigenous religions, resulting in numerous holy sites dedicated to the Faithful martyrs
  • When the Empire fell, the city was sacked, falling to northern invaders. The town's strategic and defensive location proved invaluable, leading to its prosperity. The Counts and later Dukes of Aquitania fortified the city and created numerous public structures. The Church similarly built up the area as a regional center, earning the city one of its nicknames.

Architecture

Poitiers has a reputation as a picturesque city lined with half-timbered houses and dozens of churches. Donating land to the church is a popular bequest among wealthy merchants, leading to more churches than the population requires, giving it the nickname of "City of 100 Steeples
