Douarnenez Bay

Geography

Douarnenez Bay is a large, semi-circular bay located in the Penn-ar-Bed on the Western edge of The Armorican Peninsula, part of the Mor Bras. Its northern side, seperating it from the Rade de Brest is dominated by the cruciform Crozon Peninsula, its southern "arm" reaching deep into the bay to shelter it from the sea. The Lordship of Crozon dominates this peninsula, ending with a small sliver of the Barony of Rouzig on its Eastern border. The coastline curves southwest along the Viscounty of Glazig, Along the south, the storm-tossed Kab-Sizun completes the bay.   The northern coastline alternates between rocky headlands, with cliffs between 20 - 40 meters tall, and marshy wetlands, stopped up behind sandy strips of beach and sandbars. The South is dominated by high granite cliffs, making settlement almost impossible.

Ecosystem

Douarnez Bay was at one time, a low-lying wetland, but was completely engulfed by the sea during the Fall of Ys in 249 SI. It lacks the major river outlets that dominate other bays on the Peninsula, and is almost entirely saltwater.

Localized Phenomena

The Western tip of Kab Sizun is engulfed in a perpetual Wyldstorms and the Southern side of the bay offers no protection of natural harbors. Even on calm days, the residual effects of the storm make the Southern Coast exceptionally dangerous.

Fauna & Flora

Porpoises, dolphins and Beluga, drawn to the sardines that school in the bay, are present in large numbers, competing with surface fishermen and the Marie-Morgane.

Natural Resources

The bay is home to the lucrative sardine industry, but its difficult currents, frequent storms and lack of protection from the sea prevents large-scale settlement. Most sardine fishermen sail out of the ports to the North, rather than basing themselves locally.   The Eastern coast is peppered with salting vats, cut channels that allow seawater to flow in and evaporate, leaving behind salt for harvest. Garum is made in this region. Hot springs and thermal baths are also common here, remnants of old Imperial constructions.

History

The bay was once a low-lying wetland and shallow sea, but was damned up by Gradlon Mwar and Queen Malgven to construct the beacon city of Ker-Ys, using an ingenious network of dikes, sea-walls, dams and locks. Ys prospoered, ruling the surrounding Kingdoms of Kernev and Douarnez for 200 years, before calamity struck, a loss of the sea walls and powerful Wyldstorm destroying the city and plunging the low-lying region beneath the sea.   The Marie-Morgane have begun to rebuild, their numbers growing in the region as the Beacon City is reborn.
