Gwaien Bay

Geography

Located in the Penn-ar-Bed on the Western tip of The Armorican Peninsula, Gwaien Bay is largely open to the Mor Bras along the Kernev Plateau. The storm-tossed Kab Sizun and Barony of Penn-Sardin make up its Northern coastline, separating it from Douarnenez Bay. Its curving coastline is continuous with the Barony of Bigouden until reaching the Point of Penmarch.   The coastline is quiet and sparsely populated, save for a few small fishing villages. The majority of the Eastern coastline is made up by a single long pebble beach. Behind the beach are dunes, then a low-lying wetlands of marshes and ponds. Flooding is frequent in the area.

Ecosystem

Without a natural barrier, the bay is constantly windy as breezes blow off the Mor Bras.

Fauna & Flora

The shores of Gwaien bay are taken up by willows and reeds, which are used to thatch the roofs of Bigouden.   Pods of dolphins are often seen here, as are a large number and variety of seabirds.

Natural Resources

Prawns, shrimp and lobsters are found in abundance along the rocky shore, but the complete lack of protection compared to its Northern neighbors means that even fewer sizable settlements make a permanent home here.   Seaweed is collected and burned to create soda in large quanities along the waterfront.

History

Like Douarnenez Bay to the North, Gwaien was once significantly different from its current desolation. Kido Bay was the second largest city of Great Kernev, a massive oceangoing port that funneled its wealth to Ker-Ys. The Lords of Kido were second only to the King in wealth and power. Numerous canals were carved into the land, connecting it with the cities of Ker-Ys and Kemper.   When the Wyldstorm struck the Kingdom, Kido was destroyed, the changes to the current cutting away its deep protected bay and choking its canals with mud and dead fish. The city, losing both its harbour and capital city, never recovered and was quickly abandoned within the century, lost to the ages. Submerged structures are still used as waypoints and refuges by the Marie-Morgane.
