Hy-Brasil (V)

A magically unstable island in the Faerie Isles. Like most of what is now the Faerie Isles, the area in which Hy-Brasil was located was completely subsumed by Faerie during the Tearing of the Great Veil. Unlike Emain Ablach, parts of Hy-Brasil remained visible in Bedouar. Around 200 SI, a group of mages, led by Archimago Salen, set out to perform a ritual to "pull" the island back to into the mortal world. What followed was a disaster. Hy-Brasil was ripped from any reality, violently ricocheting between Bedouar, the Veil and the Faewylde and erupting from the sea, hurtling into the air.   The island reappears simultaneously in the Faewylde and Bedouar every 7 years remaining for 7 days, 7 hours and 5 minutes.

Geography

Hy-Brasil generally floats high above the sea in a thick bank of Féth fíada deep within the veil. A wide stream flows across its surface ending in a waterfall which drops into the fog below. Moorland and meadows make up this strange place, marked by forests of impossibly twisting trees. A single stone castle sits atop a hill, surrounded by the warped ruins of a town around it. Streets loop back on themselves, twisting in corkscrews around floating houses. Lights burn in the fog, several feet away from where their lanterns sit, cold and dark. A church made of trees, grown into the shape of a Romanesque chapel, floats on its side near the center of town, while a forest nearby is made of trees of carved stone bricks and stained glass. Objects fade and appear, seemingly at random. No sounds are made on the island, save for occasional, mad laughter.

Fauna & Flora

Hy-Brasil only has one sapient inhabitant, mad King Salen, who sits in his castle, babbling happily and sharing nonsensical advice and bad poetry to those who seek out his counsel. He has a tendency to give gifts to his guests, ranging from piles of gold and silver to a single turnip. There is no discernible pattern to these gifts.   Hy-Brasil is also full of giant, black-furred rabbits, 8 feet tall. One rabbit, presumably, is named Theodoric, who serves as Salen's seneshal, knight errant and high-priest, among a myriad of other titles. There is no discernible difference between Theodoric and any other of Salen's rabbits.   Herlans can be seen wandering the island in a silent haze.

Natural Resources

Hy-Brasil seems to have a limitless supply of gold and silver, as well as turnips, which Salen gives out to visitors without explanation. The table in the castle is always set for feasting, no matter how much is eaten.   The giant rabbits are known for their high-quality, soft fur and provide a good meal, but harming them is the only known thing that will summon the Mad King's wrath, aided by seemingly unstoppable magic.
