Wizard

Scholars of the Anon

When most hear the term 'wizard,' images of adventurers come to mind, or wise old men in towers lightning the sky with fire, or lifting mountains off the world. For the most part this view of wizards comes from fanciful Cradle-tale and tavern stories rather than reality. Primarily, wizards are scholars who study the Anon (Magic) of Aldern. They work to unravel the mysteries of magic through study, theories, and testing. Scholastic endeavors and research, however, does not necessarily mean practical use, as such most so-called wizards understand the theory of magic without every using it.

It is believed that the Elf and Fairy were the first sapient beings to harness the Anon into useable magic. Their bodies, their blood, their very being, like Dragon and other magical races, are intertwined with the magic of the world. Through the elves, Human gained the ability to connect with this power. Ages of intermingling, descendant after descendant of elf and human, has passed this genetic code onto some of the human race. It is these humans with elven blood in their ancient ancestry that can use internal magic, known as Daanan, in the modern day. That said, most humans do not hold this level of power within. However, Daanan is in all living cells in minute levels. Most humans and other beings have so little within that it has little effect on the world around them. Wizards are the men and women that have learned enough of the Way of Anon to known how to work around this natural limitation.

It is wizards that have studied the Anon beyond its surface level effects. They learned of the different energies within, Daanan, Solanon, and Kianon. Where these energies come from, and how they interact to create magic. They are the ones that discovered 'magic words,' which have sounds that stimulate the energies in the air. Their studies have found components in nature with the ability to trigger effects with the right words, and body moments. It is wizards that created tools, such as a Wand, Staff, or Rod to augment and enhance their natural magic into levels capable of Casting. Where a Sorcerer, with their high levels of Daanan within, uses their bodies as a conduit of magic, the wizard uses their knowledge to manipulate the magic around them.

That said, most wizards have of elven bloodline and are thus not reliant of artificial means of casting. Wizards as a profession is most pervasive in Novyum as the cultural center of major continent of Ethae. The Normon cultures there had ancestors closely connected to the elves, giving most, if not all Normon some elven blood in their heritage. The potential of casting and the knowledge to do so is a differing matter. Wizarding College were established over time to teach students how to cast. Of course these eventually became too expensive for the common folk to afford. Thus, in the modern day, magic is only used by the elites, though most Normon have the potential to be a caster should they ever be taught. That does not mean the poor are without magic. Most Normon, of all walks of life, will have some simple casting ability, albeit Cantrip, such a creating temporary lights or starting cooking fires.

Wizards are becoming something of a dying breed in the Novyum Age. Diviner are being replaced by Trijan Bishop as advisors in noble courts. Nations are establishing laws forbidding advanced 'combat' based evocation and abjuration magic. the Church has discouraged the young generations for pursuing the ancient art of magic use. It also bans or destroys books to limit study. The wizarding curriculum is being reduced to basic use magic theory rather than practical use. More often than not in the modern day, wizards are becoming those old men and women in stories, huddled away in their libraries and laboratories, studying and sharing in their every shrinking community.

Wizard Casting: Casting for wizards is something of a forced action. Using their knowledge of the science of the Anon, their movements and words are styled to shift the magic in the world around them into the effects they desire. Their movements are quick and sharp. A sudden move and a quick stop. The verbal component to their casting is similar, with hard consonants and strong quick speaking. This is augmented by the wand, staff, or rod, used by the wizards. Wand users favor flicking movements. Staff users master boarder swings and gestures. Rod users fall somewhere in between.
