Larúneans

The larúneans1 were an elven culture who ruled Larúnas during the first few centuries after the fall of the Paþarían Empire. They formed an important link in the trade routes connecting Núrak to Marissía and Faron, and prospered as a result.
After Dragons destroyed their realm, most larúnean descendants now live in the southern Kingdom of Núrak, though there's a small community found in the Kingdom of Marissía as well.

History

Larúneans originally came from a region in western Nemirkía, known as Falis in ancient times, which currently belongs to the núrakic province of Velúsía. The area was later conquered by the Paþarían Empire and became the province of Falisstría, with the town of Marn (modern Miryn) serving as the provincial capital.
Falisstría was invaded by a human tribe known as bekórans during the chaos that followed the empire's sudden collapse, causing many of the natives to migrate to the southwest, while those who stayed behind gradually lost their cultural identity as subsequent factions laid claim to the region.
The people first settled in Larúnas in 27 a.Paþ, and by 130 a.Paþ the larúneans had expanded their territory all the way to the banks of the river Lírúl in southern Larúnas, beyond which they met fiercer resistance and never quite managed to lay claim to that territory. The larúneans grew wealthy as they began trading not only with the Núrakic Elves to the north, but with Marissíans and (mostly indirectly) the Faronians to the east.
Their civilization met an sudden end at the dawn of 6th century a.Paþ when Larúnas was attacked by dragons, creatures never seen before in Adynía. The dragons destroyed everything in their path, and only relatively few larúneans managed to escape to Núrak, where their descendants -the Þígeans- still live to this day.

Society

The larúneans were divided into a handful of states, each ruled by a local dynasty which traced its lineage back to one of the three semi-mythical chiefs -Þúsrenir, Areníres and Veisí- who lead the larúneans to the region. The land south of the river Lírúl, called Þóalas, was a disputed territory and often saw battles between larúneans against native tribes and invading þataleans.

Countries

Ekavar
Ekavar was located in eastern Larúnas, along the upper Lírúl. The capital Talke-Dúrússó was widely known as White-Dúrúson, named after the white marble used so extensively in its temples, mansions and statues. Pilgrims frequently passed through Ekavar due to its proximity to the Snake Monasteries Anþa Vylkalí-æ-Háalóin and Hara-æ-Eikelir up in the Sjorgús Mountains.
Ínúl
Ínúl was located in northern Larúnas, close to Núrak. Its capital of Lanókar was one of the oldest cities in the region, and the most powerful early in its history before the trade routes with Marissía and Faron became established.
Núldis
Núldis was located in central Larúnas, with its capital Mavassa (know as Mavas to the núrakics) at the northern banks of middle Lírúl. The núldeans were famed for their horses, olive oil and high-quality magic crystals.
Velal
Velal was located in western Larúnas, and was the most powerful larúnean country around the time the dragons came. Teiv-Dúrsó, known as Black-Dúrúson due to its location by the wine-dark Silver Sea, saw merchants from all over the western and southern coast of Adynía and beyond.

Culture

Apparel

Traditional larúnean clothing was heavily influenced by late paþarían (which again was inspired by early núrakic styles) and, later on, marissían clothing. Men's clothing consisted of long-sleeved tunics and either sandals or buskins, while women wore a long-sleeved dresse and a kind of blouse. Tall caps of various shapes and sizes were often worn for different purposes, a custom borrowed from the ancient Zameltoníans.

Cuisine

Larúnean cuisine consisted mostly on oats and wheat, vegetables, olives, pears, mutton, pork, fish and wine. Carrots were used them in all kinds of dishes, as they were the first to grow carrots for their roots as opposed to the leaves and seeds.

Language

The larúnean language is an isolate, with a number of loanwords adopted from paþarían, núrakic and marissían, as well as the languages spoken by the natives of Larúnas.
The writing system is called lúkir, featuring letters originally from paþarían but considerably modified to fit the language. It's usually written and read from left to right.

Religion

The larúneans worshipped a pantheon of deities both from their native mythology as well as foreign ones such as the cult of Kíþó.

Warfare

The larúneans were already famed for their horses back in Nemirkía, and continued relying on their equestrian skills in Larúnas, both to keep bandits on the roads at bay and in their battles against the natives of the region.
