We are approached to have a meeting with Lady Clair Heather Eaton of Inverness - Scotland. She is hoping we will help her and meet with her. Oh, btw we met Edward Sullivan - who is from Grafton, VT but ended up in Boston and started hanging with our organization. All tied to Mr. Dewey.
She heard we are experts in the unusual. She recently went to the Belgian Congo and learned about some occult activities there. Planning an exhibition to combat the cult. She is trying to get organized and get equipment as she can. Looking for a rare tome that will hopefully educate her about African cults - the Regnum Congo. The edition is in latin. She would like us to track down the book.
This edition was published in 1598 and commissioned by Baron Hoptman from Transylvania. Has three chapters not included in other editions. We perhaps met briefly at the book auction. She acquired the Hartwell translation at the auction - the Hartwell edition can help authenticate the 1598 edition. One of the Baron's copies came into the permission of Sir Wade Jermyn in England. He explored the Congo in the 1750s because of the book. She will pay expenses and $500 fees, each, and $1,000 split if we succeed - delivery. She doesn't think it will take us long - she has just been preparing other things. Figures about two weeks - month including travel. She leaves us contact information. She knows the Jermyns' property outside of Huntington, England. Suggests the Royal Geographic Society in London which contains information about his exhibitions to the Congo as well as the British Museum. She is asking that we be discrete. Also gives us a book - A Report of the Kingdom of Congo - a translation of 16th century Congo and its conversion to Christianity.
Lady Clair says that the -- some ship - is scheduled to leave in two days and has secured 1st class passage for us. We agree to do the mission. She gives us introduction letters to different locations. We have our own rooms.
On the trip, I read the Regnum Congo. Reg reads the other book.
Roscoe gets some info on the Jermyn family - they are related to or married to apes. Or own an ape. We land in the UK, and we travel to London. Right after we get off the train, a tall thin man in his 20s, walks up and introduces himself. He is Graham Craven - Daily Scoop. He asks us some questions about our trip but we deny anything. This guy is super aggressive.
We go to the British Museum. We find a section on African Artifacts in the African room. Several pottery fragments. Tools. Something about the Gray City. Artifacts provided by James Starkweather - 1919 from DaHome - Bronze Statue. From the Kingdom of Benin - armed with spear and shield. Bronze Ape - cast by lost wax method. Reg recognizes the ape as a white ape. A wooden mask from the Congo from a tribe in NE region. Looks creepy. Guardian or vengeance spirit. Afraid of large quantities of water. I created a sketch of the mask.
We find a book called West African Studies - 1899 by ethnologist Mary Kingsley. The Pygmy people from the forests. Fearful of a god who eats their people. They shared that they tricked the god with a potion that made them seem dead. In the Lakes region in central African - death cults active in Africa. One cult sounds really horrible. Screaming Callers. Seems a little sus and weird.
We have to leave. It's night time. Time for dinner. Reg wants to read newspapers. We have to go to the second best hotel because we look poor. We stay at the Durrants hotel.
We go back to the library. We receive some information via a thing called email. We learned about killings. Article dated 1852 by Sr Robert Jerymn - killed an African explorer - Samuel Seaton and three of his children.
