Mr. Dewey approaches Reginald says that he has a favor to ask. He would like Reginald to go to the town of Sleetmore in England, he would be appreciative. A distant relative - a niece of his named Eunice, married some guy. They had some kids. St. John de Wynter who has passed away. He was found buried outside his home. It wasn't reported. He had a roommate named Laurence Belvidere. Larry committed suicide in the Netherlands. The po-po believes that Larry killed St. John, buried him, and then ran off to the Netherlands where he committed suicide. Both sets of parents died from the Spanish flu. The only living relative is his sister, Vanessa de Wynter. Vanessa's aunt would like someone to discretely look into the matter and see if they can figure out what really happened. Vanessa is only 17 and trying to finish out her schooling. Eunice is Vanessa's aunt, btw. By marriage. Mr. Dewey has the auction catalog that lists books and lots... they want to be able to pay some bills and give Vanessa some money. Had some random books.
I arrange for a research study as part of this adventure to England. We take a steamer across the ocean. It takes six days to travel to Liverpool and then a train to Sleetmore in Yorkshire. We find an inn called the King George, where he made arrangements for us to stay. There are six rooms and we have four. We go down for drinks.
The scuttlebutt is that the two gentlemen were quarreling. They suggest we talk to Constable Croaker. Vanessa stays to herself mostly. The barmaid talks a bit but clams up when she realizes that family is around. A rando guy comes up and talks to us - Bob Hawkes. We ask him about any town news. There is an auction going on. Bob claims that while the constable believes that the two had an argument, that actually he had never seen them quarrel. Bob says that they were frequently out getting into trouble. He expected shenanigans. He notes that the manor had no cooks or cleaners. He notes that they didn't talk much and didn't do parties and stuff. They often walked to other towns. He tries to charm us.
The barmaid comes back. Says the two lived together. She is seriously holding back. She might think I am cray-cray. Also, I write a letter to my niece back home. "Dearest Avery, I have travelled across the big ocean to the country of England. It's incredibly gray here."
Morning arrives. We have breakfast. The barmaid is named Molly McDonald. We walk to the police dept. Apparently I am not persuasive enough but Dudley is. He explains how he went to the site and saw the body buried in the ground. Seemed about two weeks old. He suspected it was his partner because it made the most sense. The constable did admit that he's never been called to an argument between the two.
Raymond Prothero is another person.
We head to the manor and talk to Vanessa. It's overgrown. After crossing the bridge, the gatehouse on the right has been scraped - perhaps by a vehicle. The gate house has been torn apart. Enter the courtyard with the manor. On the right, there is a bunch of nettles and crap. Ruined walls in the brush. Tire tracks leading up to the manor and some hacking - removal of weeds - leading up to the manor. The manor has 3 sections. Brick tower on right. Stone tower on left. And a central area that is two stories. Stone tower is hollow. Small bonfire. Car outside. Single door on house that is open.
