Session 27 - Fighting the Living Flame

Jo takes the notes… hehehe
 
18 of Azuthair, 1083
 
Everyone preps their spells for the day sine we had a long rest.
Jo pulls the Lovers as their tarot card for the day.
 
People are nervous and fearful of the dragon causing a lot of unrest.
The group is reunited along with Andromeda and 20 reinforcements.
Andromeda recommends asking Passn for assistance, Elias agrees, Andromeda actually already asked, they are part of the reinforcements. We have a combo group of 20, 10 are Captain Blackwood sent 20 and Passn sent 10 elites to assist us.
 
Elias lets Jo know about the dwarven warband. We decide to try and get the dwarves to attack to lure the dragon out of the cave so Elias can sneak Marian out. Jo sends an animal messenger with a map a the dragons location.
 
‘A dragon has claimed your gold. This is Jo of Hammerfall. See attached map for lair location. Reinforcements are on the way.’
 
Around noon we see a herd of buffalo in the distance. They were being stalked by a group of tigers. (Usually solitary hunters why group? Mama and babies?) Because of positioning we were afraid of ending up in the midst of a stampede. Elias used minor illusion to make a tiger roar to scare them away from us. Jo used light on their hooded lantern and made a pinpoint of red light (laser pointer) to distract and lead them away from us.
 
For dinner we make a hunting party, Jo finds a lone buffalo and uses their spear to kill it. It was too heavy to drag. Mold earth couldn’t move it either. Jo ended up using thorn whip to drag it back to the caravan camp 10ft at a time. It was very tender as a result. A nice lady in the group offered to make a stew using her vegetables to feed the whole caravan, Franz made some of it into steaks.
 
We each take watches overnight. Basel has a fun conversation with one of them.
 
 
19 of Azuthair, 1083
 
Bael and Jo work out in the morning to maintain strength, Elias stretches, Franz judges and doesn’t believe in stretching.
 
The day of travel passes uneventfully. Jo finds another bird to tell the dwarven group we are a day away.
 
Jo takes first watch and sees a bright light coming from the mountain. Jo wakes Franz up to ask what it was. It was fire. Jo wakes everyone else up. We see another flame. We do see some burning dots going down the mountain. Jo prays it wasn’t the dwarves…
 
We try and recall what we know about the living flame. Jo, proficient in history, remembers the story about Arendale who helped defeat the Living Flame but he had a necklace to bring him back to life. He could continually rebirth himself so they sent him to the plane of fire. We don’t know what happened to the necklace.
 
Turns out a sabertooth tiger, was stalking us but was intimidated by our numbers and didn’t bother us.
 
 
20 of Azuthair, 1083
 
We head out in the morning, as we approach the mountain we start finding dead dwarves. We find one alive, Gondol. He tells us they didn’t receive our message about timing until after they attacked the dragon. Bael asks to borrow his axe ‘Princess Sparkle’ (named by his daughter) We don’t know if the king is alive, the king was with them. Several other dead dwarves are passed on our way up.
 
We set up an ambush, Jo uses pass without trace with 10 elites on a ridge 100 ft from the wagon. The gold is in a pile ‘spilling out’ one wheel is broken for the ruse. 10 guards hide inside Trojan horse style. 10 hide around the wagon in bushes. Elias and Bael go in to talk with the dragon to lure him out.
 
Jo snipes a flying kobold to keep our cover. Many other kobolds are at the lair to serve the dragon.
 
The Living Flame has taken damage from the fight with the dwarves but doesn’t seem bothered. He doesn’t seem interested in leaving the lair so Elias and Bael come back.
 
We leave the guards and 3 elite to deal with all the kobolds while the rest of us follow Elias back to the lair.
 
The dragon has Marian in his hands.
 
Elias is able to convince him to let his mother go. Andromeda takes her and they both flee. The king is still slumped against the wall.
 
Elias takes the initiative and attacks him with booming blade.
The Elites all shoot, only one hits. They scatter, aware that the dragon has a probably huge cone breath weapon.
Franz casts sleet storm.
Dragon uses a legendary action to beat it’s wings
Elias gets knocked prone and the dragon flies up
Jo brings up Franz with healing word and uses the ring of shooting stars to make a ball of lightning, the dragon fails but uses a legendary resistance to succeed
Bael is unconscious but succeeds on his second save
Elias hops on his broom of flying and uses thunderwave to know down a boulder, the dragon tries to bring him down but Elias slips by him. The fall deals a lot of damage
He uses his legendary actions to beat the shit out of a veteran but the veteran is barely standing
Franz uses lightning bolt, dragon succeeds for half, but it still kills him!
 
We start looking for the necklace, don’t find it
He burns into ash
Jo realizes that he WILL be reborn, but he is reborn whereever the necklace is. We make some assumptions about the necklace being in Aldoria but we don’t know for sure, Jo does know he will reform into the adult dragon he is now.
 
We get 1636 exp for the fight
 
Mariam is so happy that Elias brought Andromeda back. She is so proud of him and his acomplishments.
 
The king speaks with us. He is here to go on a diplomatic mission to Aldoria. Jo is able to convince the king to give each of the commoners 100gp each so if they decide to continue on to another town they will be able to fanantially support it. The rest of the gold is loaded back up onto the wagon as dwarven property and we begin heading back towards Aldoria.
 
We all get a longe rest.
