Lord Renliss Character in Warhammer Fantasy, Scale Universe | World Anvil

Lord Renliss

Lord Renliss is not the worst adversary of the Lizardmen Klodorex, but he is the most frequent adversary for them.   Lord Renliss is a vampire descended from Von Carstein's bloodline. While centuries old and a powerful vampire in his own right, he spent most of his time in the Old World under the thumb of his domineering sire.   His sire picked a fight with some Lamia vampires and lost badly, having to flee Slyvania entirely. In desperation Renliss' sire took to a desperate ploy to increase his magical power by drinking the blood of a Slann.   Renliss' sire was destroyed while fighting a Saurus Old Blood shortly after their arrival in Lustria. His sire's ashes and casket was placed in a makeshift Night Coach made from a zombified Stegadon. In theory this will eventually reconstitute the vampire but that is decades if not centuries away and Renliss is no longer sure if he wants to ressurect his sire.   Now liberated from his sire, Renliss had no practical means to leave Lustria and instead opted to continue his sire's original plan of drinking the blood of a Slann.   Having nearly been beaten by the forces of Klodorex once (and that was without a Slann present), Renliss opted to wait on a direct confrontation with the Lizardmen instead opting to increase his army by re-animated the corpses of various beasts and foreign visitors to Lustria incorporating the corpses of Dark Elves, Skaven, Orcs, and humans into his cosmopolitan undead army.   Experimentally, he began deliberately seeking out wizards and drinking their blood dry. Renliss has found this increases his power greatly for a short period, and seems to create a small permanent boost in power each time. Unfortunately this seems to slowly be erroding Renliss' sanity. It is not clear whether he noticed this or cares.   Spoiler to the ending of Count Renliss' Journey to Lustria
Show spoiler
Renliss discovered that he was actually being manipulated by the Slann of Klodorex almost the whole time he was in Lustria and as tried to rebel but he as discovered that the Lizardmen have literally stolen his heart and the Slann have used it to telepathically send messages to Renliss. The Slann can seize control of Renliss completely during Storms of Magic.   In theory, at any point, the First of Klodorex could slay Renliss by destroying his heart, but they have chosen not to do so thus far.
While Renliss continues plotting and scheming against the Lizardmen of Klodorex, he has generally avoided direct confrontation with them and Lizardmen in general. He is attempting to marshal additional forces and is waiting for the Lizardmen to show a moment of vulnerability before acting boldly against them.   Renliss' debut story was Count Renliss' Journey to Lustria where he was both the main character and the protagonist.   Renliss was a minor red herring in The Orphaned Temple City. He was a secondary villain in Divided We Fall and popped in and out of as X-factor character in Legacies.   In Dead Water, Renliss challenged Grand Commodore Luther Harkon for sole control of Lustria's undead. Though was the main driver of events, Huan-kai was the main POV character.     While born a human, Renliss has the enhanced strength, speed, and resilience common to most vampires. He has great fighting skill and generally fights with a magic obsidian blade he claimed as a prize from a Saurus Scar Veteran he defeated.   Renliss is a very powerful wizard though not the most stable wizard. Immediately after drinking the blood of an enemy wizard, he can use some of the magic of said defeated foe but only for a short while. Ordinarily, Renliss uses the Lore of Vampires though he has fed on the blood of enough Skink priests that he has limited ability to use the Lore of Heavens.
