Entries

Open Air Platform

A rectangular platform, made of stone and covered with stucco, on which several rows of wooden poles are followed by slats of the same material in which skulls are strutted in groups of five. Huey Tzompantli distinguishes itself from the wooden palisades of other districts' racks by the permanence of a massive masonry platform consists of thirty long steps measuring 200 feet long by 100 feet at its summit.   It is located in front of the Great Temple of Tonatuih and is open to the rest of the central plaza surrounded by other places of worship.

Alterations

Skulls

On the precinct's skull rack holds 60,000 skulls, most of which are men taken during Flower Wars from many different theaters. But there are also of women, children and losing ball players.   Excepting those of the towers and alters, the skulls are periodically replaced as they slowly fall apart on the racks and some are removed by priests to carry out other rites.

Architecture

Scaffolding

A formidable wooden scaffolding consisting of between 60 and 70 massive uprights timbers woven together with a constellation of horizontal cross beams.   Tens of thousands of decapitated human heads are impaled through their temples and suspended upon these cross beams.

Masonry

Many heads of the dead, with their teeth pulled out, are glued with lime into circular towers 12 feet high and 16 feet wide.   Two altars of skulls positioned at opposite ends of the platform are similarly made of skulls and mortar.

History

Panquetzaliztli Festival

The great rack hosts the sacrifices of Panquetzaliztli, celebrated in honour of Huitzilopochtli, among many other ceremonials distributed throughout the year. The heads are stripped and cleans of tissue, while the rest of the limbs are cannibalized by members of the nobility and special warriors.

Tourism

The relationships as seen between Sangsalgu and its partner-vassals evolved towards positions of intimidation and domination with an increased concentration in aggressiveness and religious violence.
