The Sylvan Quarter
Found almost directly south of the island district is the Sylvan Quarter. Most notably recognized as the hot spot of culture and learning in Amaranthine, the Sylvan Quarter is the location of the College of the Eight Nations, the largest university in North Equikora.
Government
Currently the Judge of the Sylvan quarter is Professor Sylsyss. One of the two half Elf instructors at the College in Amaranthine, she has held the position for nearly three years now. Her reputation has been described as aloof, inconsistent and overly critical of the aristocracy. Something the students of the district praise her for, but pretty much everyone else resents her for.
History
Home to the University of Aldir, the Sylvan Quarter is named such because the aforementioned college was initially founded by a family of elves who taught classes entirely in elvish. As a result the students at the school, whether elf or not, learned elvish and it became tradition to speak it as often as possible. To this day, according the the most recent census records, the primary language spoken in the district is elvish even though the elf population in the city is at its lowest in ages. Most merchants and shop owners still speak common, so getting the supplies you need or finding a room for the evening generally shouldn’t be hard, but it is much easier if one is fluent in elvish.
Architecture
Another distinguishing trademark of the district is the lack of the gothic architecture that predominates the majority of the city. Instead the buildings follow the geometric architectural style of the Elves including the ancient Elven focus on the cardinal directions and their religion symbols of life and death. Every building in the district is accessible by one door located on the north side of the building, with a back door exiting south only used for the disposal of waste. Furthermore, true to elven culture all of the residential and life affirming buildings (schools, temples and charities) are all located on the northern side of the district, where as the more utilitarian buildings such as graveyards, guard posts, etc. are located in the southern half of the district with a traditional ball court and park splitting the two halves of the district.
