The Temple of the Lady
On the Isle of the Gods in the Island District of Amaranthine stands the massive Temple of the Lady, built in honor of Numera the Force of Change.
Purpose / Function
While technically a cathedral, the temple was built in honor of the Force of Change, Numera, who as legend tells called all the fledgling peoples of Aldir to the Isle of the Gods to shield them in her power during the Age of Storm. The temple services several different roles in Amaranthine: firstly it is a place of worship where the faithful can come and be absolved of their sins. Second, its back rooms serve as a hospital for those in need were half a dozen clerics tend to the sick of their flock. Finally, the upper catwalks of the cathedral hold the largest collection of Aldiran artwork, functioning as a museum of the city's culture and beauty.
Alterations
Very little has been changed to the building since the completion of it's construction centuries ago. A spire was added approximately down the middle of the main portion of the building, mostly for aesthetic purposes, and minor improvements have been made here and there including improvements to the wooden framework inside the cathedral, updates to damaged stonework and so on.
Architecture
Many Amaranthians consider the Temple as the beginning of the Gothic style of architecture that has taken hold of nearly every official building in the city. Whether or not this is true is mostly speculative, however, but the building fashins the style well with two high towers marking either side of the large main doors, with ros of lfying buttresses along either side forming a sort of limestone rib cage of the cathedral. Inside the building is almost entire open, with the second floor being little more than galleries overlooking the cathedral floor from 50 in the air.
History
The foundations for the Temple were laid nearly 3 quarters of a millennia back when pilgrims from Edane traveling to the area to find a new home away from the empire encounters the farmers present on the island and heard their fantastic legend of how Numera protected them during the age of storm on the island. So gripped and inspired were they by the legend that they decided to contruct a temple more grand than the Palace of Light in the The Shayador Empire. Establishing quarries in the nearby mountains and a small community on the island construction of the temple began almost immediately, but would take two centuries to complete.
