“I prefer the term 'Byronic hero,'" Vesper said. He closed the book with a sharp snap and handed it to me.Vesper Cross is one of the main characters and an extremely powerful witch. He was born with Dark Magic, although he's registered as being born with Illusion Magic. He is currently a Librarian at the Great Library. He is a Level Three witch.
“Anti-hero, at best," I corrected dryly. “And that's only on your very best day."
“No," Vesper said, frowning and shaking his head. “No, Byronic hero is the right term for me. Questionable morals, a bit dangerous, and desperately attractive."
“Don't forget arrogant and disrespectful."
Vesper smirked. “Yes, well, I believe I am the whole package."

Personal history
Vesper and his twin, Celia, were born in Ilyrium to Aleksander Cross and Marina Cross on 31 July 1999. As part of the illustrious Cross family, Vesper grew up wealthy and privileged.
At Vesper and Celia's Arbitrium when they were seven days old, the brand-new Sensitive misread the type of magic he was born with and branded him as being born with Illusion Magic, the same as his twin. Twins having the same magic is common, and no one thought that anything was amiss.
At not quite two years old, Vesper's magic emerged; that his magic appeared so early caused concern amongst his family. (In the past, very powerful witches were killed to prevent a family's rapid ascension in the social ranks, and while the practice had gone out of vogue, the Crosses still feared others' reactions.) Even at such a young age, his parents struggled to keep his powerful--and at times, increasingly dangerous--magic both secret and under control, despite being extremely powerful witches themselves.
When the twins were not yet five, the Crosses would discover that the Sensitive had made an error when assigning Vesper's birth magic, but that mistake had saved Vesper's life: Vesper had actually been born with Dark Magic (those born with Dark Magic are either executed or brutally imprisoned). Fearing his execution or imprisonment, the Crosses had Vesper diligently study Illusion Magic in the hopes that would cover his Dark Magic.
When Vesper started the Academy at age 10, he was immediately at the top of his class, and soon proved his skills beyond those even older than him. He was easily able to convince those around him that he was born with Illusion Magic, and his Dark Magic was only practiced at home. His classmates soon became jealous of Vesper's talent, and because of that, Vesper didn't have many friends, and instead depended on his family for companionship. When he graduated the Academy, he took his Exams, which he easily passed, and was admitted to the Institute. Again, Vesper was clearly the most powerful, and his classmates continued to either ignore or ridicule him.
Vesper's popularity wasn't helped when he was promoted to Levels Five and Six before even graduating from the Institute. At the beginning of his Athenaeum education, Vesper was Apprenticed to Librarian Tristan Gold. After the required two years at the Athenaeum, he graduated and was employed as a Junior Librarian. In 2018, Vesper was promoted to Level Three, an event that was publicly announced by the Council. Vesper was suddenly thrust into fame, which in turn made Vesper uncomfortable. The same year, he was promoted to full Librarian, an event that made Vesper much happier.
Presently, Vesper is working towards a Level Two promotion and is immersed in his job in the Great Library. Vesper's research centers around magical history and Dark Magic, and he travels several times a year to procure new books.
Education
Like other children of United Britannia and Hibernia, Vesper started attending the Academy at age ten, and was then examined by the Magisterium at age fourteen. From the ages of fourteen to sixteen, he studied at the Institute, and then from sixteen to eighteen, he attended the Athenaeum, where he was given training by senior Librarians and mentored by senior Librarian Tristan Gold to prepare for his future career. From even the beginning of his education, it was obvious Vesper had immense talent, and so he was often given special instruction to ensure his talents were properly encouraged.
Employment
As one of the most powerful witches in United Britannia and Hibernia, Vesper is an accomplished Librarian at the Great Library. Although he is quite young, Vesper's expertise means that he is one of the most respected Librarians.
Morality & Philosophy
Vesper's morals are somewhat fluid, but he believes deeply in his own integrity. Like his family, Vesper often follows his own morals, despite the consequences.
Vesper shrugged and gave me one of those annoying smiles I had come to find so infuriating. “I find in certain situations that I would almost always rather have my life than my morals."
I rolled my eyes. I turned to leave until a sudden thought occurred to me. “In what situations does the 'almost' come in?" I asked.
“It seems stupid to say always now, doesn't it?" This time I did leave; Vesper's smirk had become quite unbearable.

Motivation
Vesper desires to be the most powerful; however, this motivation isn't driven by a need to be in charge, but rather to push his magic to the limits. Although fame makes Vesper uncomfortable, there is a large part of him that wants to be the first Level One witch in over two millennia.

As mentioned, Vesper doesn't have many friends. However, he met Phineas Glass on the first day of Academy, and they've been best friends ever since.
Vesper is also close to Tristan Gold, whom he Apprenticed under.
