Dark Magic

Dark Magic is a branch of magic that exists in the world of United Britannia and Hibernia. Dark Magic usually means destruction and chaos, but wielded by those with good intentions can be used to do great good. If one is not born with Dark Magic and lives with it for a period of time, they can become corrupt. (Even those born with Dark Magic can become corrupted when around many others with the same in close proximity, a la the Mala).

History

Up until the late 17th century, this branch of magic was termed "Occult Magic," simply because much of this branch is not understood. In the 1660s, the branch began to be viewed as malevolent, and the name changed to Dark Magic. As to why the opinion changed is unknown, although it was thought to be the result of a political rivalry taken too far. Currently, public opinion of Dark Magic has remained unchanged since the name change.

Regulation

Dark Magic is heavily regulated by the Council. In fact, it is the most regulated branch of magic. If a baby is born with Dark Magic and the Sensitive detects it, the baby is unquestionably executed.

Subtypes

Dark Magic includes spells for murder, maiming, causing pain, manipulating emotions, destruction, and power erasure (of course, this list is not exhaustive). Blood magic (i.e., blood is used in the spell) is also a type of Dark Magic.
Born with Dark Magic: Vesper Cross (secretly), Kasper Gray (secretly)   Less than 2% of witches are born with Dark Magic.
