Duchy of Buchais

The Duchy of Buchais is a small semi-autonomous duchy under the banner of Tana's Empire, famous for its fruits, enabled by the region's soil and ideal combination of sunny and rainy days. Buchais does not maintain a large standing army of its own, instead relying on the Order of the Flower. Buchais is also one of the few countries in the Continent which doesn't have a Secret Service.
While the duchy's surface may be fairy and serene, beneath the cellars it hides a gargantuan underground system of interconnecting ancient adits, mines and dungeons, as well as natural caverns and tunnels hollowed by lava.

Government

A duchy, also called a dukedom, is a territory, fief, or domain ruled by a duke or duchess, a ruler hierarchically second to the king or queen. The Duchy of Freed is a subordinate district of Tana's Empire.

Culture

The above-ground part of the region is inhabited predominantly by humans. Underground parts remained unsearched and are inhabited by numerous monsters.

As a duchy of Tana's Empire, the Duchy of Buchais follows the empire's lead when it comes to justice.

Economy

Exchange

In the ancient times the region had a mining industry with mines like the Darkearth Mine. Since the middle point of the 11th century however, the major area of the duchy's economy has been the vegetable industry and the closed adits and shafts are being slowly colonized by monsters.
For the detail of commerce, fiscality, and taxation, as a duchy of Tana's Empire, the Duchy of Buchais follows the empire's lead.

History

After Tana's Great Reunion, the newly founded empire was looking for resources, and the region under the Roaring plainswere full of ores. The main occupation of early Buchais citizens was mining, as they hollowed many adits and mines. Several dungeons were also constructed then, probably to imprison political enemies.
The land was parcellated among several petty lords and dukes. It is only in the 9th century that the duchy was unified. In an effort to civilize the realm, the duke changed to punitive laws, laws that were adopted on the empire's scale.
