Centaur Species in Toriel | World Anvil

Centaur

The proud race of creatures known as centaurs combines the speed and strength of horses with the determination and intelligence of humans. Their upper bodies allow them to wield weapons for hunting or warfare, while their lower bodies allow them to traverse great distances at tremendous speed or to trample an enemy underfoot.   Powerful and curious, those horselike creatures love wide spaces and the freedom to travel. As much as they can, centaurs run — in Green earth wild plains, Hot savanna, and verdant forest. They race the wind, hooves thundering and tails streaming behind them, and are the embodiment of freedom. The tribe, running with the wind for days on end, often end up crossing the frontier to the Lightfoot Land, or sometimes even to Tana's Empire.

Culture

Centaurs generally live in herd of ten to fifty individuals. You might never encounter centaurs out in the wild. However, if they are too old or weak to travel, a lone centaur may end up living in a humanoid settlement. These noble individuals are often revered in the community for their knowledge of the world and ability to read natural omens.   Centaur consider helping non fey as beneath them. Someone carrying a Human on their back will be shamed cause he was used as a common mule. Centaurs on the whole seem to be rather proud of their species, which is evident in their testiness whenever anyone even accidentally allud to them being "used" or in any way employed by other humanoids.   Centaurs tend to be naturally gifted in healing Magic, Astronomy, archery and Divination.

Characteristics

Physical features

Centaurs possess a majestic stature, standing tall with an upper half reminiscent of the graceful elves. This upper portion blesses them with unparalleled beauty and delicate features. Their captivating appearances exhibit a range of colors, encompassing the diverse palette found within the human spectrum and also includes skin in shades of copper, bronze for their upper half.   Their lower half, equine in form, which can manifest in various horse-like coats, from shades of grey to creamy tones. However, it is important to note that the equine half of their body is not exclusively limited to the form of a horse. Instead, the diversity among centaur clans and their geographic origins give rise to various manifestations of their equine heritage. Some centaurs may bear the lower body of a majestic deer, while others might possess the grace and swiftness of a gazelle.   In terms of their hair, centaurs exhibit a delightful array of colors, from almost bluish-white strands to vibrant hues of green or blue. Their eyes, like shimmering pools, glisten in shades of liquid gold or silver, captivating all who gaze upon them. It is worth noting that unlike their elven counterparts, centaurs can possess body or facial hair, particularly among the males, further accentuating their distinctive nature.

History

After the Great Extinction, when gnomes and elves started to go back to the material plane, centaurs tagged along, curious to explore the vast land of the material plains. Unlike elves or gnomes, centaurs are not descendent of the fey but are full-blown fey. As such Centaurs sense the interconnectedness of the natural world. Thus, they celebrate family and community as microcosms of that greater connection. They have a strong clan identity. They tend to have friendly relations with the elves and gnomes they meet, able to sense their fey heritage.
