Campaign 2 Session 1 - Against The Slave Lords

The General Summary:

A fight broke out at the local pub on the first night of Rezsfest.
  The characters find themselves in front of the local village overlord. The overloard finishes talking about some local issues, including the fight the night before, paces the room for a couple of minutes, then turns to the group.
  After admonishing the group for their participation in the fight, and the ensueing damages, the overlord offers a way for the group to atone.
  Several recent events have the overloard concerned; mutilated bodies are washing to shore on the local lake near the village, a group of slavers had set up camp near the village (these slavers had been dealt with through a raiding party, and a rushed trial and execution, a quarry that is said to be haunted and may be producing to well to be true, and a missing scout. The group is first offered the chance to investigate the mutilations, the quarry, and the missing scout as reparations for their part in the fight, but after the group asked for a financial reward, the overlord offered 200gp per surviving group member. He didn't really expect to have to pay out the entire bounty.
  The group left the office, and devised a plan. They had been suggested 3 ways to get in to the mines:
 
  • As foreign stone buyers: knocking on the front door, negotiating for a delivery of stone, then asking for a tour of the operations.
  •  
  • Sneaking through the woods to an old air shaft that should lead in to the depths of the mines
  •  
  • Travelling up the river to find the cave systems that might lead in to the heart of the mines
  Half the party went to the village docks to procure a boat to take them up the river, the other half went to the quarry to scout the mine air vent that the overlord described.
  The group at the docks were unsuccessful in obtaining a boat due to a misunderstanding between the party and the only boat captain the group approached. He at first thought they were trying to buy the boat for 10gp and wasn't willing to sell his livelyhood for such a low amount. The party finally got the point across that they were trying to charter the boat, but now the captain believed the 10gp was to get the group to the mouth of the Caraholm river, not to take them up the river to the cave systems. Frustrated, the party returned to the meeting place in the village and waited for the other half of the group to return.
  The other half of the group made their way to the quarry, leaving the road as the guardhouse just came in to sight. They made their way through the woods to the spot that Neistor had described, finding the air shaft was overgrown with vines and shrubs. Not wanting to alert the guardhouse just 100 yards away, they sneaked back through the woods, back to the road, then down to the village to meet up with the other half of the group.
  After a heated discussion, the plan was to wait until night fall, then head back to the mine air shaft. It should be mentioned that this was not a unanimous decision.
  At dusk, the full group made their way up to the quarry, again leaving the road just as the guardhouse came in to view. Talis went to the east to create a distraction, while the rest of the party went to the west to the air shaft.
  Talis stepped from the brush, and lit a torch, waving it in the air and yelling at the guard tower. He abandoned the torch when guards came out to investigate, fading back in to the brush, and circling around to rejoin the party.
  The rest of the party began to expose the air shaft, clearing the vines and brush away. They dropped a torch in to the hole, hearing it clang through the grate at the bottom of the shaft and in to the chamber beyond.
  Using a nearby stump, they lowered nearly 150 feet of rope down the hole, and Varg climbed down. A few good jumps on the grate proved that it was securely anchored. Varg pulled his warhammer and began to pound away at the joint of the mortar and the grate, hoping to break the grate loose. By the time he did finally break through, he had attracted attention of a couple of guards in the caverns below. One guard stayed to hold off the intruders, the other ran to get help.
Shooting from the top of the shaft, the group killed the guard, then dropped down the rope in to the cavern.   End of session
