Emberspace

Emberspace is a sparsely populated crystal sphere located within the Rapide Frontier. It is so named for the red hot planets that provide the only light in this sunless space.   Emberspace is located on a downstream Phlogiston current of both Gardenspace and Podspace and is upstream from Nilespace.   Since the end of the Second Unhuman War, the Scro have established a presence in Emberspace, though exactly where their base is located is unknown to outsiders.

Geography

Unlike most astrally standard crystal spheres, there is no sun in Emberspace. Unlike other infamously dark spheres, like the aptly named Darkspace, Emberspace is not without light, as the various freefloating planets of Emberspace each contain molten hot cores that leak through the surface, bathing the entire sphere in dim light.   Due to the dangers present in the system and the difficulties in identifying individual planets without their orbit around a sun to inform, there are no astrally standard names for the planets of Emberspace. However, the various planets can be divided into three types.
  • Gray Embers are little more than floating chunks of charcoal and ash. Despite the planets' hostility to life, traders have been known to fight over the valued deposits of coal that can be found on and just beneath the surface.
  • Cracked Embers are jet black worlds, only visible due to the red cracks of molten lava that crisscross the surface. The planets' black continents are hardened rock floating on the sea of molten lava just beneath the surface.
  • Red Embers are worlds so hot they glow red, providing most of the system's meager light. They are little more than floating pools of lava, and while its hypothesized that fire elementals may live on them, no humanoid could survive the intense heat.
In addition to the three types of planets, two other natural phenomena can threaten visitors to the system. Enormous clouds of smoke, belched out from the various planets, extend across vast sections of the sphere's wildspace. While useful for hiding, these smoke clouds also foul the air of any spelljammer passing through them and endanger the crews to various creatures that may hide within.   Cinder storms are far more dangerous snoke clouds. They are turbulent sections of wildspace where glowing hot cinders pelt any person or object inside like terrestrial hail. The wind, limited visability, and very real risk of being caught on fire discourages any from sailing into a cinder storm unless absolutely necessary.

History

For years, Emberspace had no permenant spacefaring settlements, save for the occasional colony set up to try and harvest the raw materials found on the sphere's various planets. Invariably, each of these colonies would disappear, as the residents of them either left for a less hostile system or died. However, the allure of relatively easy to access coal and other fuel sources kept bringing people back.   Following the Second Unhuman War, traders and miners traveling into Emberspace began running into an increasingly large Scro presence within the sphere. Though traders and miners were not barred from the system, the hostility from the Scro, who would often follow visitors to the system closely, has nonetheless led to a steady decline in their presence. All of this has led to widespread rumors about a Scro military installation in Emberspace, similar to the IEN's in Coldspace, but the exact location and layout of the base has yet to be verified.

Author's Notes

The original design of Embersrpace and its look was taken from the fanzine Threshold and designed by Chimpman. While I have made changes, the core is their work. The original fanzine is still available, and I would encourage everyone to check it out at this link
