Arborspace

Arborspace is a crystal sphere located within the Rapide Frontier. It is named for the massive time-spanning world tree, Modun, that dominates the sole planet of the system and stretches its branches into Wildspace.   Arborspace is located on a downstream Phlogiston current from Bugspace and Crackedspace and is upstream of Bluespace.   The planet is Modun is inhabited and among the most technologically advanced of the Rapide Frontier, but the overmining of the world tree's sap, which provides the power Arborians need to keep their civilization running, has resulted in a brutally harsh society.

Geography

At the center of Arborspace is a sun, referred to as the Sun inhabitants of the system and Besed to outsiders to differentiate it from the myriad of other suns in the Known Spheres.   Orbitting around Besed is a single planet, Modun, which is dominated by a single, massive world tree that shares the planet's name. Perched on top of the Modun world tree is the planet's only moon, which became entangled in the leaves and branches of the planet thousands of years ago and rests there still.

Localized Phenomena

While the Modun world tree is by far the most striking feature of this crystal sphere, its interesting properties go beyond just its dominating appearance. The Modun connects the planet it rests upon with all past, present, and future versions of itself, allowing those that travel deep inside its caverous interior to come face to face with creatures and people from across time. However, there are no records of any creature that has managed to use the Modun to travel through time, and all instances of individuals attempting to do so end with the attemptee never being heard from again.   The sap of the Modun is also highly potent as an energy source and can be burned to generate enormous amounts of electricity. It is hard as ore and requires mining equipment to claim. The sap also reforms over time, though it does so extraordinarily slowly.

Fauna & Flora

Among the various sentient races that call Arborspace home are the rock gnomes and autognomes of Modun. The radical technological advancement of Modun society can be entirely placed upon the gnomes who've managed to turn the sap of the Modun world tree into a highly portable and efficient energy source.

History

For centuries, the inhabitants of Arborspace mined and used the sap of the Modun to power their society. Electricity allowed for trams to connect city streets, power in personal homes, extensive rail systems, and electric powered intrasystem spelljammers. Spelljammers that left the system, however, contained no electricity for fear of setting off a Flow explosion.   In 1412, after numerous power outages and other disruptions, it became known that the Modun had nearly no sap left to mine. Desperate to maintain their high standard of living and quality of life, Arborians instituted a lottery to send residents into the future to mine for the Modun's sap once it had been regrown. These residents, following five years of labor, were then returned to their families on the day they left, older, exhausted, and many suffering inuries from the difficulties of mining.   While this arrangement has lasted for nearly a century now, there is a growing divide on Modun about the sustainability of mining further and further into the future of the world tree and what effect that might have on later generations.
