Crackedspace
Crackedspace is an unihabited crystal sphere in the Rapide Frontier. It is named after the large cracks in the shell of the crystal sphere that allow Phlogiston to leak into the system. This leakage is why the sphere is so uninhabited and so dangerous, as the Phlogiston slowly works its way to the star in the center of the sphere over the course of four months, whereupon it ignites, destroying everything in the sphere in a massive fireball.
Crackedspace is seen by many to form the center of the Rapide Frontier. It is located on a downstream Flow current from Spindlespace and Arcanaspace, and is upstream of Mirrorspace, Webspace, and Coldspace.
Geography
In the center of Crackedspace is an orange star referred to as the Igniter. Orbitting around the igniter are two desolate planets and an unknown obsidian structure. They are, in order from nearest to furthest from the igniter:
- The Spindle, an obsidian structure the size of a small moon. None have been able to access its interior, if one exists, due to the dangers posed by its proximity to the Igniter.
- Lisel, a water world covered by constant thunderstorms from the flash boiling it is constantly subjected to.
- Riyak, an earth world orbitted by an asteroid belt of what once was its moon before it was destroyed by the regular ignitions in the sphere.
Localized Phenomena
Unlike every other known crystal sphere, the Flow is present within this system, flowing in from the cracks that give it is name. Over the course of four months, the Phlogiston slowly inches deeper and deeper into the sphere until it makes contact with the Igniter, which creates an explosive chain reaction that affects the entire sphere. Tongues of flame have even been reported during these events to shoot out of the sphere's cracks, and travelers and encouraged to avoid the area around the sphere during its regular ignitions.
Due to the presence of the Flow, navigation of the sphere is generally faster than in most spheres, as spelljammers could maintain their full speeds while subsumed in the Flow. Additionally, a spelljamming helm is not necessary to enter or leave Crackedspace.
Fauna & Flora
At one point, it is clear that some civiliation existed within Crackedspace. Beyond the strange obsidian spindle that floats near the Igniter, ruins dot the surface of Riyak, though the years have scorched away any measurable trace of who these people once were.
Tourism
Visitors to Crackedspace are near unheard of. While there are mysteries surrounding the sphere, the dangers of Phlogiston explosions and inhospitable planets make it a frequently ignored sphere.
