His Serene Highness King Halkir Jakkenha ta Failenha
Halkir is the reigning king of Kaleina, and has been since he was 23 years old. After the death of his father, he committed himself to being the leader Kaleina needed and putting the needs of his people ahead of all others. The previous king, Kauhara, had been unpopular with the masses for spending most of his time placating the nobility and tending to their needs ahead of anything else. Halkir was determined to be different, and to be a man of the people.
Childhood
Halkir split his time growing up between living in Fiana and learning the ways of kingship from his father, and living among druids in Vaansiam to enrich his religious education, learn magic from druids, and strengthen political ties with Kaleina's greatest ally. He preferred his life in Vaansiam as a child, where he had more freedom to spend time in nature and run wild. When he was 18, it was decided that he would now live permanently in Fiana, as he had become an adult and it was time to play a more active role in politics. At that age, he was outgoing, flippant, and spent as much time away from the castle - and preferably in a tavern - as he could. Though his father and the nobility feared he would never be ready to take responsibility, this attitude endeared him to his people. Halkir married his wife, Tuulla, when he was 22. He had met Tuulla at a ball and they fell in love over a summer of evening parties.Early Kingship
Only a year after the marriage, his father died and he was forced to take the throne. Overwhelmed and regretting all the times he didn't pay attention during meetings, Tuulla was an indispensable support for him. Although she was only 19 herself, she proved to be savvy and compassionate. Together, they had the support of the commoners, and it was only the nobility they had to sway to their side. Halkir's first crisis came only 6 months into his reign with the Kulo Incident. An entire island in Lake Pauvahäs was overtaken by the Forest, and over a hundred of his citizens perished. Some blamed him for mismanaging the Border Rangers, and though direct fault was never proven, he took the accusations to heart. After the incident, Halkir's attitude sobered for good. He loved his people, and he despised the fear and danger they all lived in due to the Forest. It became his single most important goal to find a way to free Kaleina from the Forest's tyranny.Halkir's Promise
Halkir, already a talented musician and practitioner of magic, delved deep into study to find a way to save his people. During this time, Tuulla became pregnant with their first child. He eventually discovered an ancient spell that he believed would be Kaleina's salvation, but it would take a long time to come to fruition. Halkir used magic to place the seed of the spell in Tuulla's unborn child, which would then grow with the child into a powerful ability that could protect Kaleina and wipe out the forest. Soon after, the child was born - Keilan, the Prince Royal. Halkir promised the people of Kaleina that salvation would come when his son reached adulthood. Soon after birth, Halkir convinced Tuulla to send Keilan away to the same druid circle in Vaansiam that he had lived with as a child. In the wilds of Vaansiam, surrounded by druids, his magical abilities would flourish.Later Life
From then on, Halkir was a dutiful and strategic king. He forwent luxuries for himself to ensure the needs of his people were met and grew into the wisdom his father feared he would forever lack. He gained the respect of the Assembly and became a broadly beloved king. Tragedy struck in the year 727, when Tuulla drowned in a boating accident. Halkir, and the whole kingdom of Kingdom of Kaleina, mourned her loss. From then on, he became more impatient by the day for Keilan to turn 18 and claim his destiny, so that he could at least have his other child at his side again.
