Border Rangers Organization in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

Border Rangers

While the Royal Kaleinen Constabulary patrols the interior islands of Kaleina, the Border Rangers are responsible for protecting it from external threats. The Rangers are the front line at keeping the Forest and its monsters out of the lakes.   They have a reputation for being a very insular organization, which comes from how often they're stationed in very dangerous forts on the mainland to monitor the coast. They spend a lot of time away from regular society and surrounded by only other rangers. They are also, on average, the highest paid soldiers due to them facing the highest risk of death or injury.

Structure

Marshal of the Rangers

The marshal is the commander of the entire organization. They answer directly to the king. Although normally the Marshal of the Rangers is on the same level as the Marshals of the Constabulary and the Royal Guard, the Marshal of the Rangers has the power to declare a state of emergency that allows them to give orders to the other branches.   During a state of emergency, only the king can limit the marshal's powers, and only the king can overrule the marshal on whether the situation is truly an emergency. An emergency almost invariably means an immediate or ongoing threat of infestation on Kaleina's islands.   The marshal is considered the one who is ultimately responsible for protecting Kaleina from being overrun by the Forest. This heavy responsibility is considered a honourable burden. Looking like they're too keen to get the promotion is a major mark against a person when it comes time to appoint a new marshal, because it is assumed that anyone who truly understands the responsibility and graveness of the job would not so eagerly pursue it.   The marshal answers to the king alone. By tradition, whatever resources - financial, manpower, or supplies - that are requested are given without argument. It is also tradition that if the Forest ever manages to sprout up on an island, having gotten through the Rangers' defences, the marshal will resign out of the shame of their failure.

Vice Marshal

Each region of Kaleina has a vice marshal who oversees security for just their region. They report to the marshal, and form a committee of advisors. The marshal is generally promoted from this group by the king.   The regions of Lake Olla and Lake Pauvahäs are the largest and most populated, and thus their vice marshals command the most respect. Although Port Hope is technically an independent region, it is a single city-state and falls under the command of the vice marshal of Lake Olla. Additionally, there is a Vice Marshal of Foreign Affairs who is responsible for the forts established in other countries.

Admiral of the Salamander Corps

At the same level as the vice marshals is the admiral of the Salamander Corps. The Salamanders are a distinct branch within the Rangers that have their own operations.

Seneschal

The Rangers operate a system of forts. Each fort is under the control of a seneschal. A fort is generally positioned on a coast and patrols the forest in the region surrounding it. All rangers are assigned to a specific fort, and all ranger activities in an area are based out of that fort.

Commander

Commanders head various departments that are based out of forts. In most cases, this includes scouting, perimeter control, and general fort defence.
