Salamander Corps

The Salamander Corps is a special subdivision of the Border Rangers.   In the past, the Kaleinen navy was the most powerful in Veiama. Since there exodus to the islands, naval combat has been very rare. Conflicts between nations are uncommon, and most of the military is dedicated to defending Kaleina against the inhuman threat of the forest and the uhaaki. Additionally, the lakes are frozen for almost half of the year, making any sort of sailing impossible.   After the exodus, the navy was re-purposed into the Salamander Corps, an amphibious unit that serves as navy in the summer and infantry in the winter. As part of the military focused on defending Kaleina from external threats, they are part of the Border Rangers. They haven't forgotten their history as an independent navy, however, and have a strong cultural identity within the Rangers.   Although Veiama has 4 distinct seasons, within the Salamander Corps, the year is broken into into summer and winter. Summer is when the lakes are navigable by ship, and winter is when they switch to ground operations. Fall and spring are short, transitional phases that refer to the month or so when the lake is partially frozen or melted. A Salamander will declare winter to have begun when the official calendar is only halfway through fall if it's a cold year.   In either season, if there is a domestic incident that requires a more militarized response than the Constabulary is equipped for, the Salamander Corps is most likely to be sent, since the forts are more vital to keep manned with Rangers.

Summer Operations

In the summer, the Salamanders operate as a navy. Though international conflicts are rare, the Salamanders would be the first to respond to an invasion into Kaleina's waters.   Their other important job is to patrol the coastline from the water. Though Rangers scout the area around their forts and all harbours, there are vast stretches of coastline or river that are far from a fort and dangerous to reach on foot. The navy patrols these areas to check for signs of an attempted crossing - either en illegal human crossing to avoid quarantine measures, or an invasion by creatures from the forest.   The navy is also responsible for transporting troops wherever they need to go, whether they are from the Rangers, the Constabulary, or the King's Guard.

Winter Operations

When the lakes freeze, sailing grinds to a halt. Rather than patrolling on ship, they switch to large sleds pulled by teams of caribou. Smaller, more agile dog sled teams accompany the larger vessel.   The command and organization structure remains as intact as possible during winter operations. Each ship is replaced by 5 - 10 caribou sleds, that stick together while patrolling the ice. The captain of a ship is the commanding officer of a group of sleds, and they refer to their group as a 'ship' despite being grounded for the winter.

Structure

Admiral

The admiral is the head of the Salamander Corps and is ranked equally to the vice marshals in the Rangers. They report to the Marshal of the Rangers. Historically, there has often been a point of resentment among admirals who have not forgotten when the navy was Kaleina's most prized military force. The admiral is generally given a lot of freedom to run the Salamander Corps how they see fit.

Commodore

A commodore is in charge of 20 ships. In practice, there is one commodore stationed in Lake Pauvahäs, one in Valai & Hamad, and two in Lake Olla, who also oversee the ships that venture into the North Branches and Havasar River.

Captain

A captain is in charge of one ship. Both commodores and the admiral serve as captains on their own flagships along with their duties overseeing all the others.

Lieutenant

Depending on the size of a ship, the number of lieutenants vary. They oversee around 30 - 50 troops each, and each sled in a ship would have a lieutenant stationed in command during winter operations.
