The Forest

There is only one forest in Veiama.   A century ago, the region was spotted with marshes, forests, and meadows. Then the bloodsap trees began popping up, the forests filled with predatory uhaaki, and the environment merged into one massive, nameless, deadly forest.   The Forest is viewed as a living entity. The primary agenda of the Border Rangers is to keep the Forest from "invading" the islands. They talk of the Forest gobbling up towns and wanting to spread.   The Forest began near Lake Oska, but at this point, no one knows quite how far it spreads. It is known to have overwhelmed neighbouring regions. When the last trade ships set out from Port Hope about 55 years ago, they reported seeing the Forest along the coast for hundreds of miles south of Veiama. Scholars suggest that at least desert regions would stop it, but the bloodsap trees are remarkably hardy and are suspected to be able to adapt to just about anywhere. People in Veiama treat the Forest as if it has consumed the entire world save for their quarantined islands, and it just as well may have, since they haven't heard from anyone beyond it in 50 years.

Fauna & Flora

The forest is dominated by bloodsap trees. They grow throughout the forest, and are the culprit of its spread. The uhaaki prowl throughout the forest.   Beyond the invasive creatures, the forest in Veiama is a boreal habitat. The trees interspersed between the bloodsaps are mostly coniferous, such as spruces, firs, and pines. There are also birches, aspens, and poplars.   Animals that were native to the forest before the bloodsaps have persisted. It supports all the animals expected of a northern forest environment, such as caribou, wolves, owls, bears, etc.   However, alongside the normal animals that have been present in the forest for thousands of years, not-beasts have become common. These are the result of animals being affected by the sap of bloodsap trees. The sap doesn't affect all creatures who ingest it, but those that are vulnerable to it experience transformation into monstrous creatures that only partially resemble what they began as. These creatures are aggressive and very dangerous.
