Salibret (/ˈsæ.lɨ.brət/, (SAL-i-bret))

Esteemed Salibret Varenagos /væɹ.ən'a.goʊs/, (VAR-en-AH-gos)

Salibret was influential in Zaiyevi politics near the end of the second Volcanic milennium. She believed in he Unity that Walemin proposed, and played a prominent role in securing Zaiyev's entrance into it. She came to regret her part in that decision, however, as the Unity swerved away from the promised ideal.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Salibret had Callas's Twist, an inherited condition that had afflicted many in her family during the last several generations. She received the best treatment available and took medication for it throughout her life, but still suffered some muscle weakness and lack of coordination.  The final degenerative stage set in just after she reached the age of 40, an above-average lifespan for one with the disease.

Personal history

Up until her late teens, Salibret traveled frequently to and from Galtern for medical treatment. Because it was one of the outer islands in the cluster, Zaiyev had no access to a direct route across the Inside Sea, and the journey could take up to ten days depending on the season. During one of those visits she learned about the conduit then under construction between Galtern and Mraydor that would allow boats to cross the sea between the islands in less than a day. Salibret sent a message to Walemin asking if it would be possible to link Zaiyev to the conduit.
Walemin happened to be on Galtern at the time, and met Salibret in person to explain her full plan: running conduits between all of the Cluster Islands and joining all their disparate legal and economic systems into one entity, giving smaller and poorer islands the same opportunities available to wealthier ones. Salibret immediately approved of the idea, and from then on became an advocate of Zaiyev joining the Unity. After her treatment regimen was complete, she traveled around the island speaking in favor of the Unity, using her own illness as an example of the potential benefits. Thanks largely to her efforts, in 2006 Vol a majority of Zaiyev's mayors approved the proposal to join.
The first years of membership in the Unity were promising, with a conduit branch to Zaiyev completed in 2008 Vol. However, Salibret soon observed with alarm that Walemin as Uniter was gathering more and more personal power. Having become friendly with her, Salibret tried to encourage her to exercise patience and listen to reasonable concerns.
Kezlaf took over as Uniter in 2014 Vol after Walemin's death, and Salibret's disillusionment was complete. Issues concerning the cluster's outer islands began to be neglected. The conduit boats intended for emergency transportation were either scrapped or taken over for the new Uniter's personal travel. Salibret's protests to Zaiyev's Unity governor were ignored. Feeling somewhat responsible for persuading Zaiyev to join the Unity that failed them, she bought boats and recruited pilots with the intention of building up her own fleet dedicated to humanitarian aid.
In 2016 Vol news came that The Eddy and all the Water Seekers in it had been destroyed by a submarine volcano. For two thousand years the Seekers had been known to provide help in the wake of disasters; with the Eddy gone, it was Salibret's fleet that provided the bulk of the support when eruptions rocked the islands of Shappal and Pudarog in the following years.
By 2024 Vol Salibret's health was failing to the point that she could no longer manage the fleet herself. She turned the operations over to Tremmew, a good friend, valued pilot, and father of her daughter, while herself remaining in an advising capacity. Before she died the next year she was fully satisfied in Tremmew's handling of both the fleet and Alcendis's future estate.

Mental Trauma

Salibret struggled with the conflicting pressures of needing a female child to carry on her bloodline, but also not wanting to pass along a debilitating illness. In the end she decided to take the risk of having a child, but over the next few years experienced several miscarriages.
Her one successful pregnancy was nearly fatal. When labor commenced early, along with a surprisingly strong tremor, she and Tremmew took one of her own fleet's boats to Galtern, which indeed saved her life. They arrived in time for the medical staff to identify and treat an extremely rare and usually deadly condition in the baby. Although this condition did not affect Salibret directly, the physical toll compounded with her pre-existing illness and the stress she was under came close to killing her.
After that experience, Salibret became paranoid about her daughter's health, even after it became clear that Alcendis hadn't inherited Callas's Twist. Salibret hired a full-time medical caregiver to manage the medication that treated Alcendis's neonatal collapse condition.

Social

Hobbies & Pets

As soon as she learned she had the family illness, Salibret began training in the art of expressive movement in order to strengthen her body.  Although she never achieved performance quality, she often danced informally for her friends and family.

Wealth & Financial state

The Varen bloodline is one of Zaiyev's oldest and wealthiest. As the last living Varen, Salibret's daughter Alcendis has inherited all that remained after the 2030 twin volcanic eruptions.
