Zaiyev

Zaiyev is one of the smaller Cluster islands, known formerly as the center of education. The first institution was founded as a way to research geothermal energy without endangering the populations of the larger islands, but eventually transformed into a school of engineering. The school branched out into other fields, initially hard sciences such as physics and chemistry, but by the latter half of the Volcanic Era trained students in virtually all professions outside of biology and medicine. During the Unity's domination, the major volcano on Zaiyev was deliberately erupted, triggered by a device ironically developed there. That eruption destabilized another active peak, and the combined mud and lava flows destroyed all city infrastructure and killed more than 85% of the inhabitants. Zaiyev is gradually recovering from the eruptions, but is unlikely to be resettled, as the volcanoes remains unstable.
