Volcanic Era

The Volcanic Era is counted from the year that sustained geothermal energy was first produced. The abbreviation is Vol and appears after the number. The year 1 in the Volcanic Era is the same as the year 9849 in the Oceanic Era, and -1 Vol is 9848 Oce; there is no year 0 Vol. The years from -200 Vol to 10,000 Oce are frequently given in both systems. The convention in such cases is to follow the Oceanic year with the Volcanic year. When negative, the Volcanic year is given between parentheses; when positive, the years are separated with a slash. Eg: 9700 Oce (-149 Vol) and 9924 Oce / 76 Vol.
