Mraydor

Mraydor is the largest and most northerly of the Cluster islands. Having the greatest number of active volcanoes, it is also the industrial center of civilization. Three separate times during the first few hundred years of the island's settlement, eruptions destroyed nearly the entire population, and the island remained abandoned for a full generation after the third such event. The development of geothermal power made Mraydor again an enticing place to live despite the risks. As the inhabitants' technology and depth of knowledge grew, they became better able to monitor and predict the volcanoes' activity. Several generations later, after multiple successful evacuations established the success of the system, the volcano engineers began testing a method of intentionally opening vents on uninhabited portions of the island, resulting in controlled flows that bled off the island's internal pressure. As a result, Mraydor is being constantly renewed. The vent fields migrate around the island, with old flows allowed to weather and then given over to agriculture, followed by the city outskirts, then the core city with the densest population diametrically opposite the vent fields. The core city then gives way to industrial and then waste use. Finally, the waste dumps are buried in flow from new vents.
