Dragon War

The world of Errath has seen war and conflict throughout it's long history, but none so catastrophic to the people, the land, and the fabric of reality as what came to be known as The Dragon War.    The industrial age brought war to a new level. What many believed to be another in a siege of Midlands campaigns turned into a long protracted campaign with weapons and magics that could kill at an unprecedented level. Magical creatures, including the dragons that would give the war its name, became involved, wracking new levels of death and destruction. It is estimated that more people died in the first battle of the war than had died in all wars of the century previous. Battlefields became nightmares of magical effects, with soldiers forced into them from the scant safety of mystically reinforced trenches. Cities were ravaged in ways never before seen. The opening of a rift to the hells within the Elven capitol brought the world's attention to the world changing possibilities of the war. Soon it involved nearly every known nation, with new battlefronts in Xianshou , Somaj, and on the oceans.

The Conflict

Prelude

Following the Queen's War, the Drachenkaier of Helgest sought to build a peaceful coalition with the nations of the Midlands. Old animosities and mistrusts held out though, making it seemingly impossible. Believing that a united Midlands reforged into a new Helvenic Empire was in the continent's best interests, he calledin allies and launched a war of conquest.

Outcome

The continent of the Midlands was ravaged by the war, and remains a banned zone to this day. The remnants of war magic and technology, summoned planar beings, and monstorus creatures are found throughout. Some cities disappeared entirely, and Scars to incredibly dangerous lands dot the continent.

Aftermath

What many see as the culmination of the Midlands long period of national wars led to the deaths of one quarter of the known world's population, the scourging of most of a continent, and planar incursions that have warped the nature of magic and reality.

Legacy

It has also led to an incredible shift in the perception of war. What not long ago was a source of valor, pride, heroes, and legends is now also a source of shame, nightmares, and darkness.
