Half-Elf

Half-elves are extremely rare, as elves and humans, for the most part, live on two entirely different celestial bodies. However, they are not unheard of, as some high elves are banished to Jorden by their own kind, while some wood elves are among the Gondolin Druids, connected via the Feywild to Jorden.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Half-elves are somewhere between humans and elves in shape. They are not quite as slender as elves, but also not quite as bulky as humans. Their ears are pointed like those of an elf, but they are capable of growing facial hair like humans.

Genetics and Reproduction

Most half-elves are born to a human and an elf, who, as per normal, reproduce via sexual intercourse. A half-elf embryo takes approximately twelve months to develop enough to be born. This short gestation period is especially dangerous for an elven mother, as elves are not built for such a fast process, and any elven woman who decides to bear the children of a human must therefore be extremely careful. It is a little easier for a human mother, as humans are accustomed to much faster rates of development. However, it is still no easier than any normal pregnancy for either race. Though uncommon, sometimes two half-elves will bear children together. The pregnancy experience for a half-elven mother can be anywhere between that of an elf and a human. On Jorden, their metabolic rate ebbs and flows with the seasons like that of humans. On Laythe, this same cycle tries to function without seasons, but is rather chaotic about it.

Growth Rate & Stages

Half-elves mature at the same rate and with the same consistency as humans, reaching adulthood at 10 eoks or 20 years.

Ecology and Habitats

Keeping a newborn half-elf is quite difficult, as a half-elf's body temperature is somewhere between that of elves and humans, conditions which are not naturally occurring on Laythe or Jorden. As they grow older, they will become a little more tolerant of the temperatures around them, though half-elves on Jorden will still wear warm, thick clothing even in summer, and half-elves on Laythe will still sweat a lot and consume a lot of water.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Half-elves don't eat as much meat as their human parents, though they are still more omnivorous than elves.

Biological Cycle

Half-elves age much more slowly than humans, generally living to be over 90 eoks, or 180 years, old. They age in a similar fashion to humans, though they comparatively slow down as they get older, looking like a 20-eok-old human at around 40 eoks.

Conservation Status
In some cultures, half-elves are made fun of. In others, they are idolized. Still in others, they are stared at for being out of the ordinary, but treated fairly. They are a civilized race, and do not need protection.
