Agave

History:
Agave first met the party while traveling through Voldaren as he was arrested and imprisoned alongside several other members of the group.   Within the expedition party he is a Cartographer.   Agave, after a nice nap in a jail cell, was eager to lead the group through the forests as a navigator and their expertise helped them get to the encampment quite swiftly. Inside the abandoned goblin village in Garlem he found a bunch of strange mechanical animals and a "shrine" to some inventor. The bonfire he created helped soften the recently disturbed frozen dirt that covered the cavernous roots.
Within the cavernous roots, Agave performed a ritual with Namina to communicate with the tree spirit connected to the roots. Together they were able to learn some disturbing information about how the tree is losing its ability to connect to this world which could prove detrimental. His connection to the land helped guide the party through the roots to the correct area of the tunnels and find the ancient thing they were looking for near some goblin bones.
Inside the maze, Agave has been offered both desires and fears which he has handled quite well. He resisted the urge to take from the donation pile even after seeing a bottle of expensive looking tequila at the top, he refrained from obsessing over the dying plants during his trial and overcame the fear of encroaching blight, and he managed to only have one shot of tequila despite it being the best he's ever had in the room with the Dragon's Candle.   His ability to navigate has led the party through the maze as he makes his map of the uncharted area which has helped the party with backtracking and exploring the maze in full. Although something was off with what he drew...or just off with the maze in general as their back tracking lead them past an occupied room that should have been empty.   He was also the one to spot the hidden exit from the maze and lead the party past the guardian which helped everyone save both time and energy to survive the intense vortex into The Gates.
After arriving in The Gates, Agave was the one to utilize his medicinal know-how to stabilize Namina. He also went on a scouting mission with Hysteria.   Their first morning in the strange land, Agave was able to climb up a nearby tree to locate water. He found a River and town several days out, and was able to locate closer water while the group was traveling through Tympi's Forest for the first time.
While dealing with The Spirit of Christmas, Agave was transformed into an adorable stuffed elephant.
During the Downtime between Nurend 06-12, Agave spent much of his time surveying the surrounding area, helping analyze plants/spirits with DAN and Namina, and discovering a particularly unusual map hidden in nature.   This map led him to discover a very old satchel with a Wooden Hand, Fountain Pen, and some rather unpleasant documents. The design on the satchel, as well as the hand, led Agave to believe this was likely a Murid, possibly one from his own village. This hypothesis was confirmed, at least for the satchel, while in The Hidden Village of Mothlights.   In the Mothlights, Agave provided many stories, maps and drawings to the bartender at Treestump Tavern. This brightened the mothling's day quite a bit along with the promises to find Tympi.
While traveling west to find Tympi, Agave's experience with navigation and as a guide and cartographer has helped the Spiritual Travelers move safely throughout the environment for the most part. He was also able to find a large map with important locations in Tympi's House. This map was copied with great haste and accuracy, and the information on it has been invaluable while traveling back east towards the darkness and The Old Woman's Cottage.   While at The Well of Darkness, Agave's ability to call down moonlight was able to do...something to the darkness within this pit and apparently condense it into an Unusual Fragment.
While in Thera Relovut, Agave used his ability to transform into animals to scout around The Prison and learn more about the group's captors. He was able to discover that some of Ilven's Court wanted to release the Spiritual Travelers to go find Ilven while others still wanted them held captive and blamed them for her disappearance.   His knowledge of Cartography proved useful within the prison when the group discovered the Warden's Office and the folded map and Strange Gem held within. Though the map was ignored for the time being, its ominous nature was taken into account.   His guidance through the swamp and towards Dorchar helped the group make it out of the swamp a bit faster, and his knowledge of nature helped find useful foods to eat along the way. He was also able to help guide the group towards treasure through the Creeping Death, and their knowledge of plants helped find a cure for the blight caused by the Death Blossoms.   His trick that has worked against darkness in the past was not very effective against The Sinkhole as it caused his beam of moonlight to instead become blood red and begin conversing with the group. While this was spooky, it did provide some much needed information and a target for Namina.
In the Eadarling civilizations, Agave tested the waters with some simple magic to see if these people would react similarly to other things he experienced in the Swamp like Uisge. After confirming they seemed like sociable folk, he began drinking the rest of his time in The Daytime Village of Aotri.   He helped the group get a cart and some mounts by brewing some Societea, though it didn't end up getting used in the trade.
While traveling back to the Mothlights with Tympi, Agave provided guidance and communicated with Tympi to keep the cart on course with the destination safely. He managed to keep the Weresnails even slower than normal and kept Kaswink alive after she was knocked out.   He kept up a good fight agains the Unblinking Sein, constantly dealing damage and putting holes in its form with moonlight, but he still ended up with the worst "wounds" of anyone in that fight.
During his downtime, Agave visited every Mothlight Tree on the map and catalogued them (see Session 34: "Having Fun" Even Without a Library Card). Through this he also learned of attempts to log the forest, and was able to learn of the Uginot ec Mlet before the encounter with them.
While in Drimures, Agave was particularly interested in getting Arjan back to sanity as it meant more Moonshine. He spent his time in animal forms sneaking about and gathering clues, and his praise for Arjan's craft helped gain some trust at the time.   His stance on the obelisk was to do more research before proceeding, which ended up being a pretty good idea in the long run.   After Torment was defeated, Agave got to work on putting together a big funeral for the town so that it can finally rest. He had a meadow grow over the burnt down town, and as he finished the funeral rights the clouds in the sky in this particular area of the Spirit World parted, and the sky was visible for the first time since arriving in this realm.
Outside Thera Relovut, Agave helped put the camp together and just helped people around the camp until DAN alerted him about something in the swamp. Agave didn't see anything, but went along with it. Despite this, DAN stayed back with Frode as Agave went into the swamp with Kaswink...this would lead to the loss of his hand.   He stayed in camp, helping to relocate it while Kaswink and Hysteria got the refugees/prisoners freed, and used some advanced magic to keep everyone hidden in case anything troublesome were to be out and about.
During the events involving the interrogation of Quince, Agave was returning a couple of corrupted, though kinda cleansed and sentient again Humans to their families. He spent some time treating his injured wrist, and would eventually return to the Spiritual Travelers to speak with the Chittering Spirit.
During the meeting with Simol, Agave "sacrificed" his hand and its history to help Kaswink get more information.   He was very curious about Kaswink's condition while she was divulging Cursed Information, and provided what healing he could to keep her from madness or death.
When fighting the Whendigo, Agave spoke with a couple of corrupted plants. He learned that the only animal seen within the last day was the old man in camp and that the events they were stuck at the end of seemed to have happened a long time ago.   In combat he conjurred a giant scorpion which helped soak up a lot of damage, likely keeping DAN, and others, alive.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Agave lost his hand to a mysterious force, likely The Oni according to Kaswink, and has since replaced his hand with the Wooden Hand.

Body Features

Agave is a Murid hailing from the deserts of Ulktorov's Keep. As a Murid he is an anthropomorphic rat, and the desert climate has given his tribe's descendants sand-colored fur to help with hiding in the environment. He wears robes with different shades of brown and carries a staff and sickle as forms of druidic attunement. As a scout and guide he also has containers to store various maps.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

The most open about his past so far, Agave has revealed a history of heavy drinking to the party and explained that his mission into the Spirit World involves a blight that has affected his land.   To help get to Voldaren to join the Spirit World expedition, he traveled with Kaswink as her guide while the bugbear provided some much needed protection.   His fear of heights was evident on the airship ride, though he overcame this long enough to sketch maps of the ground below.   Agave, along with Namina, learned some disturbing information while in the cavernous roots beneath the goblin village which caused him to collapse from exhaustion, though he doesn't seem to remember whatever it was, oh well.   He had a nice long conversation with Frode and DAN while Hysteria was off doing secret things. He was able to provide some great life advice to his new friend as their bonds grew stronger.
Agave's Candlelight Thought that he gave to the Winter Hart was of fragments of what must be Agave's tribe, gathered around eating a large meal. The candle smelled like a hearty winter meal.
While surveying during his downtime, Agave learned of a desert plant spirit that speaks of a blight and requests the aid of other plantlife and plant spirits. A description of the spirit was provided, and from what Agave heard it seemed to resemble a humanoid Aloe plant of some type. He also discovered a strange satchel and hand which reminded him of his home. This satchel, according to the shopkeeps at Pondside Paraphernalia, was a very specific design handmade by them for a Murid that was brought into the mothlights by Tympi.   This spirit was brought up again while Agave was interviewing the Page of Swords. This Page actually had a drawing of the mentioned spirit, along with confirmation that she had been looking for aid in dealing with a blight.   A book about Desert Plant Spirits was also given to Agave while the Spiritual Travelers were visiting the Old Woman. This book has yet to be read or even opened, but it is in Agave's posession.
While riding with Ilven in her carriage, Agave asked of the blight and answered Ilven's questions about his intentions in this land. His responses made her feel as though his quest for the blight was genuine, and she was persuaded to provide information about a dark omen to the group of travelers.
Agave met the supposed Queen of the forest, Tympi and is hoping to get some information about the Blight that has caused a great deal of suffering in his homeland.
During the fight with The Unblinking Sein, Agave suffered the most from the fear effects involved. Indeed, they nearly died and likely would have were it not for a speedy exit thanks to the other Spiritual Travelers. The fear he experienced at the beginning of the fight was similar to Namina's: that the toxic air would be his death.
During the Wheredigo dream, Agave played the part of a tree. He initially offered his leaves to the caterpillar, but retracted the offer and even shook the creature free of his branches after experiencing the pain.
During the Tea Party with the Chittering Spirit, Agave received the memories of a Murid that died in the Spirit World many decades ago. These memories threatened to take over his mind as he very nearly experienced ego death thinking that he was the new memory and this new murid in his mind was the true owner of the body...it got really confusing really fast, but Agave held fast, resisted and came out on top.   He also had some crazy dreams that night.   Agave's Dreams
These dreams occur during the long rest before teleporting back to your Home Base.   During your dreams, and for several minutes after you wake up, you have this sense of being someone else . The feeling still persists throughout the day, just to a lesser extent, but it is worst when you first wake up. Like your dreams and the moment between rest and being in the waking world makes your mind more vulnerable to what's going on.   The dreams you have are of a time that is clearly long before your own, though really the architecture and traditions haven't changed much. The location is definitely recognizable, especially the Blue Agave at the center of the village. It actually does your heart good to see it in such good health, but only briefly, as it is replaced with your real thoughts that something is very wrong. Whose real thoughts? Yours or perhaps yours, you aren't sure, but either way everything is going to change, and you're confused as to why you would be so happy to see this desert plant in good health... Is someone else in your head?   You focus, the visions you had last night were so surreal... a blight, a land full of spirits, and the trapped spirit of your Blue Agave needing to be freed... Something has trapped it somewhere in the Spirit World, and nobody else believes you. You'll have to do something about it yourself, you'll have to travel into that land somehow, otherwise the future you saw would come to pass. A blight, the Blue Agave slowly dying, and all the world being at risk. It's a tall order, actions must be taken, and your journey through the desert begins.
You dream within your dreams. You dream of being someone else, traveling with five (or is it 7) companions, and being on a journey much like your own...but you don't recognize any of these people. You dream of walking through the familiar desert, and guiding whoever needs it to help pay for your food and lodging wherever you happen to end up. Different villages, different Murids, but they still don't listen to your plight...nobody believes the kid with visions of the future. Not until it's too late.   Rain is a big part of your dream. You can recognize that there is a great deal of time not being in the rain, but for some reason the sound permeates everything. Heavy, heavy rain. Not the kind that hits the canopy and drizzles down the trees. No, the kind in the middle of a desert that floods and collides directly with your small frame. You almost feel like you're swimming...   You dream within your dreams...and within those as well. You dream that you wake up several times, but each time it's in the "wrong" body. Almost a whole life passes by, day after day of dreams and the waking world that blend together to become a confusing lattice of another mind.
The last time you wake up you're in a river. It rushes over you, it's not unlike the arroyos when the rains come, but there's only sand on one side of you... to your right you see a forest that seems to go on forever. Recognition sets in, you've seen this view before. This river, you know it...but how? Your dreams continue to get intermingled. Who remembers the river, was it a vision of the future or was it just Agave's own memories?   The journey takes you deeper into the forest, and the last time you wake up you're in a tree surrounded by lights and strange moth folk. Their leader took you in to keep you safe and guide you during your time here. She had some knowledge of the Rot of Blight, she had knowledge of many things and she told you how to protect yourself against the things in the swamp. How to get into the Rotting Gate, what lies within, and what can be done to fight it...   It would be helpful to stop the blight before it comes, but it would be dangerous. She also had comments about your ...vision, a vision of this world and of the trapped spirit of a Lonely Blue Agave.
During your dreams, you dreamed.   But you never woke up.   You fell asleep, and you dreamed, and you fell asleep again.   The worst part about it all is that the lines that blurred you and this one that traveled long ago...they don't have a chance to become vulnerable. You just keep falling asleep, but you never wake up to refresh your mind.   The Dream takes you so deep, and there's an immense amount of Sadness that comes with it. A ray of sunshine makes it through the canopy, and it is avoided as you bandage your left wrist. Stay in the shadows, the voice says...the light only brings pain. There's a night that you feel ...drenched.
There's a man. He's dressed in the finery of Nobles that you saw in paintings of Voldaren.   His expression is one that looks as though it was never happy, and he is drenched in something deeply unpleasant. It looks like some greenish-yellow and mostly translucent ooze... and he makes you feel as though your bones ache, there's no reason to do anything, there's nothing you would really want to try to do anyways.   You write about it with the pen you stole from that moth lady before you ran off. The pages don't take the ink though, they're too drenched...what is this stuff anyways? It's slimy, it's green and yellow... It makes you feel even heavier. Has that man given you something? I wish he would go away.   The wrist has festered. The wound won't heal, and the hand fell off some few dreams ago. You feel pain in "your own wrist", pain that is familiar. The wooden hand fits nicely, and it works right away...the pain is going away too, but your bones and joints still feel heavy, stiff even.
You finally dream that you wake up... It's dark out and the world might as well be gone for good.   This is not where you fell asleep, but, when did you fall asleep?   Your friends call out to you, and it is time to go... but do they really care about you? Does anybody? Why would they, it's not like you can do anything right, not with this wrist, anyways.   You have a moment of reflection though, not too long after the torpor of the many mornings and nights wears off. Your new head companion became trapped by some spirit, a spirit drenched in greenish-yellow slime that seemed to force feelings of Depression on them. Something involving the wooden hand...and the possibility that whatever has taken your Agave's Spirit might not be in the Rotting Gate...but that dealing with something that causes blight might still be essential, especially for Frode.   Something tells you that the origin of this Hand isn't your clan's as it wasn't attached to you when you left.   Something tells you that the Voldaren Noble that you saw might have something to do with it...and that he may have gotten lost in this Spirit World far to the north.
Within this Dream there was also a Paper Bird Memory   I am writing this in hopes that some small piece of me might be found someday...perhaps as a warning, or perhaps it’s due to a fear of what is to come. I feel myself slipping further and further from who I was everyday, and the more of my mind I lose the less I notice that I am also losing my body. Soon I will be no more than a wooden doll lost somewhere in the world, or perhaps sitting on some weirdo’s shelf somewhere.
“I was once a noble in a land called Voldaren. Here I was known by many as a generous man, giving when I could, helping build homes, handing out food to the less fortunate, and hopefully standing apart from the other nobility as someone to be admired. Everyone loved me and my life was great. But I lost all of that when I went on a journey up north and became separated from my guide. I called out hoping someone would hear me, and I did receive a response.   I followed the voices, stepping through the mush of semi-melted snow, freezing as my pants and socks soaked through. I suddenly felt heavy not just with this frigid dampness, but also just...heavy. My eyelids were having trouble staying open, my arms and legs refusing to move, the day just seemed heavy on my shoulders. Progress was the last thing on my mind and had the appearance of an endless tundra that I couldn’t possibly cross. It was at this time that I saw a cabin and was able to get out of the snow and rain and into a warm bed that I would hopefully never have to leave. I had lost my hand at the same time I had lost my guide, but in this new shelter I found a wooden prosthetic. It reacted to my touch and it fit my empty wrist quite well.
Over time I eventually found the courage to step out of this place and what I found outside was shocking to say the least: The mountains were much farther away than I remember, I couldn’t see the Frozen Shore anywhere, and around me was just the tundra I had visions of in my depressed torpor. I wandered for some time, it was cold but less awful than the place I had escaped and I was feeling better after the days of rest. As I journeyed I began to feel ...different. I didn’t need to sleep or eat, I felt stronger, it was invigorating, truly! But over time these benefits became negatives. I felt detached from my humanity, and I could feel myself shrinking back, peeling away, getting smaller despite my form remaining constant. With each passing day the wood spread up my arm… and it is at this point that it has covered most of my body save the center of my abdomen.   The “me” that I am is withered, small, and feels almost as though it is dripping with some viscous fluid. The noble garb that the wooden “me” that I am not feels as rags upon my spirit, and as I recede I can tell that tomorrow morning I will be separated from my body, leaving behind a wooden doll… What will “I” be then?"
