Kelsara (Kell-saar-uh)

At A Glance

The Kelsara family has held power in these lands, surrounded on all sides by great trunks of elder trees, since -101 BL. Despite their long occupation, the family has not sought to aggressively expand or, as some suggest, any such ambitions are often nipped in the bud by their patrons under the leaves. The Kelsara family is regarded as fairly provincial and superstitious much like peasants are across the kingdom. Rituals for everyday activities like walking through the woods, hunting and felling trees are conducted by most residents within the lands.

But the Kelsara line has only allowed the creation of more lumber camps and small hamlets in places where natural forces have 'gifted' the residents with a clearing or access to some resource. The Kelsarans, high and low folk, often speak of the forests as alive and this has a tendency to discomfort outsiders and raise the suspicions of the Church.

The current head of the family, Lord Arnear Kelsara, is in his late thirties and is busy with his growing family and the pressing duties within the lands.

Culture

The Kelsara domain and its peoples are heavily invested in lumber due to their proximity to the large forests (NAMES...). As such, while woodwards and lumberjacks form a significant slice of the professions; even farmers and village folk do the occasional forestry work for additional income. This connection to the forest lends itself to a strangeness about the people. While they seem fearless and tread beneath the leaves of deep woods often they regularly make propitiations and small offerings at a number of forest shrines. Their fireside tales feature the forest, or a spirit that dwells within it--its composition varies by story, prominently and regularly.

This connection to the forest often strikes others as superstition or even some form of dark spirit worship. The High Church has investigated a number of families in the domain. Although the discovery of witches occurs from time to time, who is to say that they were such foul practitioners or just folklorists with a strong connection to the wild within.
