Broken Fang Province

The least populated realm of Suranth, the south-western region known as the Broken Fang Province gets its moniker and reputation for its stalwart inhabitants. The people here are some of the toughest in the country, for they have to be. They neighbor the tainted lands of the Steppes, a place from which countless Joten, Green-skins, Bestials and worse can come spilling out in tides of fury and death, seeking to plunder, destroy, rape, pillage and kill for their dark gods. The Steppes themselves are a tainted land, where the touch of the Void has not yet truly or fully faded. Yet these bold frontier folk live and even, to a point, thrive here. They mine the edges of the mountains for precious resources, they chop the lowland woods for timber, all the while standing fast against the beings of darkness and madness, fearless and unbowed. It is an honor beyond measure to command any of the few military troops of the region, and officers count themselves blessed by Sir Kartheart himself when such an honor is bestowed upon them. The region is also known for being the birthplace of the Iron Dragons, this relatively new elite troop, and the famous unit is actually based out of the province's capital of Suaitheantas. The region only counts around ninety thousand of Suranthi's citizenry, that is those whom have a voice, a vote, and live in a settlement large enough to have any sort of sway.

As an aside, this is of course the thing to understand, and nowhere may it be more true than here. The smallest of hamlets and thorps that may pop up, these people may be taxed, but they likely are not counted on any census, as such settlements are generally built on wild frontiers, and unless they grow quite quickly, they likely as not will be razed and utterly destroyed within the decade by beast, climate or monster. So one must always assume population counts within tomes such as these are more like a very rough estimate of a limited scope. In truth, scholars within the fields relevant to such things assume the actual population of proper goodly folk, that is Children of the Ascended, within all the Tundra Realms likely is around a million, but for posterity in tomes such as these, one generally uses the official census counted population, as that is the most reliable data set.

The Broken Fang Province is known for being a military hot-bed, a place where cities and towns become as great fortresses, and even villages are generally fortified in one fashion or another and have a small (likely a squad of basic infantry at minimum, so 10 or so) assigned to a watch-tower or garrison building within their settlement. As one might expect this province is one where danger is most ever present, and one would do well to travel armed, and with as many competent companions as one can manage.

Structure

Below, a brief introduction to the key individuals in the region, those with wealth, power, and prestige.

Lord Protectorate Gnolundi Gormniade Barazbarak: The current Field Marshal of the Suranthi First Ward Forces, or the SFWF, and the founder of the Iron Dragons. This branch of military operations is separated from the regular military, navy or air force in that they also act as the military police, that is the Iron Dragons do, the new age elite unit of fighters whom, during peace time, handle investigation and enforcement of military law. They also have this function in war time, though many rules are less stringent in war time (whilst a few also become more stringent with more dire punishments, as one might expect). This position also puts him in charge of the various patrol forces within the country, the Road, Rail, and Air Wardens, along with the Coast Guard. Gnolundi himself is a dwarf of nearly four centuries, a hardened veteran of many conflicts. He is a grizzled and scarred dwarf, his hair kept buzzed short, silvery grey in color. His beard is kept long, almost to his navel, and loosely tied almost as one would tie a ponytail. He shows his age here, for the deep loamy brown of his youth is all but gone, replaced with a silvery-wispy greying. He is missing his left eye and a large part of his nose, courtesy of a orc axe blade from a conflict of his youth. He is a military dwarf through and through, and always looks the part, adhering strictly to parade standards and military dress code even, supposedly, in his home life. To this day he wakes at least two hours before dawn daily, going for a long run and to maintain his gear, kit and weapons, even when at home in his clan's hold, and not on campaign.

Chief Nazril Holisinion Orea: The dwarven matriarch of Clan Orea, a clan well known for their skill at engineering and construction, this region is known to be home to some of the finest engineers and is a favored place of recruitment for the Suranthi Armed Forces. Chief Nazril herself is well noted as a structural engineer, and brilliant architect, someone whom in a clan of dwarf-folk whom all take great pride in their stone and metal work, is spoken of by her people reverently as seeming 'ta speak t'e language o' metal, stone, an' even timber!'. She takes great pride in this knowledge, so much so she actually finds time, though it is hard in being the head of government in the region, but she manages to insist and find time to teach a course to engineering students in their fifth and final year of schooling, one she calls, "Applications; the complex Sciences of Structural Engineering Theory" where she takes real world examples of detailed site maps, and land surveys, along with a basic idea of what they are to build, and works through week by week with her students. She provides material prices, a full budget they have to accomplish the project, for just the material. It is not for the engineer to concern themselves with labor costs, that is for the actual project manager after all. That person or party must establish how much the whole project can cost, and how much coin they are willing to contribute to an engineer or team of them, along with material acquisition. She runs this course for a full year, during which, to simulate real world demands, you will have three projects. The idea being her four hour class is merely office hours with your fellow guild members to seek advice and ask questions, as if you are not operating on the same project, which is a thing she has experienced plenty of. Her students know she judges all these things, including collaborative willingness to aid their fellow engineers. An intellectual mind, her soft silvery eyes match her deep slate toned hair, and wearing it braided to one side, highlights those curious and inquisitive eyes, ones that speak volumes to this dwarf's demeanor and attitude. She is a well of energy as well, very outspoken and energetic, particularly for dwarf-kind.

Baron Trenoric Vansimac Ravea: Another naval region, mostly, the governing noble here is Baron Trenoric of Clan Ravea, and is known for his continued and previous service with distinction in the Suranthi Navy. A marine through and through this dwarf is an odd one amongst his people, indeed the whole clan is. They love the water, and prefer feeling the deck of a ship under their feet as opposed to dryland. He is First Captain of the Southern Fleet, and is well known for his methods of naval combat, focused less on the cannon as most would, other than a way to suppress enemy vessels to get within boarding range. He's learned his tactics from the very foe he most often had to vanquish. Pirates. Brigands with swift moving river boats, small schooners and other such quick and shallow moving vessels that hunt the waters of the Glacial sea and the various river systems all about Suranth. Be they bandits, brigands, green-skins or even the rare but terrifying dark elves, the tactics are very much universal, and effective. Shock, Awe, and sudden assault. Baron Trenoric embraces these bold tactics, and has proven time and again that they can be just as effective when turned against the scum that use them to prey on innocent merchant vessels. He is a flashy one for a dwarf, like any captain who truly leads, he likes to stand out, and dresses for the occasion, with bright colors. He is young for a dwarf in his position, not yet two hundred and fifty, but well respected.

Baron Sekker Rivef: A large woodsman type fellow, one would not at first think he was a noble of any sort. Built like a mountain, this man (and he is a man, a human) of thirty-eight years is also known as Death-Walker by the Green-Skin tribes upon the Steppes, and they fear him greatly. He built his reputation among them with his infamous battle-axe simply known as 'The Sender'. His estate and the lands under his governance stand at what is known as 'The Black Gate', the river valley that cuts north and up through the Steppes, this river valley is the point of contact and travel that is used by any warbands or raids of Green-Skins, Foul Bestials, Joten or worse from the Steppes. These hardy mountain folk are the first line of defense against the tides of darkness that would (and do) try and sweep south and east out of the Steppes. Given these facts, it is therefore not surprising that the man known in fear as 'Death-Walker' to the enemies of Suranth within the Steppes is seen as nothing less than the perfect leader both in governance and military matters for the region.

Culture

The people here are hard and tough folk, very independent, resilient, and of a militant mind as well. They are what one would expect from the so called 'Bastion of the Tundra' in that aspect. They exemplify patriotism, truly loving their home and their country. They have a strong sense of community, and in any given settlement you will find that this sense of community can bridge many gaps, even those seeded deeply in long lived ethnic history.

Assets

A militant culture means many here could and would willingly volunteer as militia in times of need. But the true military presence here is appropriate to the provinces small populace, however many of the best and most veteran troops are stationed all about the province, their experience and wealth of knowledge seen as a dual asset in both defense, and in training the many new recruits the region produces, comparative to its population. By percentage of population, this province has the highest rate of enlistment rate out of any in Suranth, though the Stormlands are a close second indeed. As to actual military force, besides the raw recruits at any given time, they are listed below.

1646 Clansmen

1055 Saltbeards

477 Tundra Rovers

340 Iron Riders

226 Storm-Lancers

227 Iron Dragons

170 Warpriest/Priests/Magisters/Physicians

170: Engineers/Artisans

227 Wave-RunnersĀ (An assumed number based on percentage of Suranth's population the region has, that report to a handler in the region. No real concrete basis for this number.)

Demography and Population

The Broken Fang Province is home to roughly 90000 of Suranth's citizens, and breaks down roughly as follows:

Race Rough % of Population Count
Dwarf 31% 27900
Elf 3% 2700
Halfling 11% 9900
Human 20% 18000
Gnome 12% 10800
Vrock 21% 18900
Tiefling 2% 1800

Territories

The Broken Fang Province encompasses all lands east of the ocean from its west coast, through the Steppes and across the tundra to the western most banks of the Tiber Bulge, where the Tiber River flows out in a bulging half loop to the west before turning back east on its journey to the Glacial Sea. It encompasses all lands south of Port Raven, until you come to the northern banks of the Suaithi River. In total this means a claim that far exceeds what is currently inhabitated, an estimated 145000 square kilometers or so. Much of this, of course, extends into the extremely dangerous, but potentially mineral and ore rich Steppes.

Technological Level

Early Industrial Revolution within Urban areas

Late Renaissance - Early Industrial Revolution in more Rural areas

Religion

Sir Kartheart is the favored patron god here, though any worship of any of the Ascended is legal of course.

Foreign Relations

One can refer to Suranth's overall diplomatic positions.

Agriculture & Industry

Military and mining, along with timber, are her three major boons. The region is not one that agriculture is possible in any sense of the word, and therefore, hunting and fishing are also key. But military, and the military industry, be it basic equipment, armor, or weapons, is the province's greatest asset and resource, as those whom have such talents manufacture such items in bulk.

Trade & Transport

Rail road and river all connect here, though the closer one comes to the Steppes, the more dangerous the travel, and the less options will be present. River travel, for a steep fee, will take you the furthest west, though you will still be a good 200 kms from the coast, and that 200 kms would be through the heart of the Steppes, perhaps the most dangerous and foolhardy idea for a trek in all of Suranth.

Education

The folks here are of a simpler bent, and their education is often one within the scope of their family, and their craft. This province likely has one of the lowest literacy rates of any in Suranth, a rough scholarly estimate being that only about fifty percent of full grown adults can actually read. This is compared to an average of likely seventy or eighty percent in the rest of the country.

Infrastructure

There isn't much to say on this part for the Broken Fang Province. Its all military style, simple, efficient, functional, and most importantly, always built with defense in mind when it comes to walls, towns, or fortifications. Things like insuring that buildings get taller towards the center of a settlement, to insure even if your walls are breached, you can fall back block by block and keep the higher ground.

Stand Fast, for we are Immoveable!
