Harborside
Harborside is Tatharia Capitolina's bustling port district, the city’s primary gateway for trade and travel. It thrives on the ceaseless flow of goods, merchants, and travelers, making it the most high-traffic area within the city walls. Despite its vital role in the city’s economy, Harborside is also home to some of the most poorly maintained infrastructure in Tatharia Capitolina. The district’s residents, predominantly the working class and disenfranchised, often endure the hardships of overcrowding, poor living conditions, and exploitation by wealthy landowners who dominate the local economy.
Harborside’s geography is defined by a natural cliff to the north and west, effectively walling off the district from much of the city. This elevation difference places the rest of Tatharia Capitolina quite literally above Harborside, symbolizing the social and economic divide that characterizes the district. The harbor itself is a hive of activity, with ships arriving and departing at all hours, ensuring a constant hum of commerce and movement.
Demographics
The district’s population consists primarily of dockworkers, sailors, laborers, and their families, alongside a smaller number of merchants and shopkeepers who cater to the needs of the port. Overwhelmingly Human and Halfling, the residents reflect a mix of nationalities and ethnic backgrounds, making Harborside a cultural crossroads. They make up the bulk of the city’s massive workforce, living in cramped and often unsanitary conditions. While there is significant cultural diversity due to the steady influx of travelers and foreign merchants, this has done little to alleviate the harsh realities faced by Harborside’s working class.Landmarks and Areas of Interest
- The Lighthouse of Vigilance: Standing tall on the edge of the natural cliff, the Lighthouse of Vigilance is visible from both the bay and much of the city. Its constant light guides ships safely into the harbor, symbolizing hope and resilience for sailors and locals alike. Maintained diligently by palace staff, the lighthouse stands in pristine condition, a gleaming reminder of the city’s governance and authority over the harbor below.
- The Ridges: To the south of the district lie the Ridges, a series of neighborhoods rising tier upon tier, where the rotating light from the lighthouse splashes across the north-facing walls of many buildings. Known for its inexpensive and compact housing, the Ridge has gained a reputation among locals for its practical yet cramped accommodations. Nearby shops even sell light-blocking window covers at a premium, catering to residents seeking respite from the incessant glow.
- The Stacks: An industrial zone distinctive for its many towering smoke stacks that churn out steam and smoke throughout the day. The Stacks are home to numerous small factories and workshops that produce goods essential to both the harbor and the city at large. While the area provides critical employment for Harborside's residents, it is also notorious for its pollution and noise. The ever-present plumes of smoke make The Stacks a visible landmark, easily recognized from other parts of the city and symbolizing the relentless labor that fuels Tatharia Capitolina's bustling economy.
