Outside

Located west of Tatharia Capitolina’s city walls, the Outside District, colloquially referred to as simply "Outside," is the most densely populated area under the city's direct governance. Bordered by Agrivestum to the north, Oldside and Uptown to the east, and Southlane to the south, Outside began as a modest settlement near Northwestgate but has since expanded into a sprawling urban hub. This district’s vibrant energy stems from its diverse population, with residents hailing from various regions of the Empire and beyond.   Outside’s status as a cultural melting pot has made it one of the most dynamic districts in Tatharia Capitolina. Here, one can wander from a halfling bakery specializing in sweet honey pies to a beastfolk tavern offering spicy, herbal stews from the Magical Forest. Street performers often entertain with instruments and dances unfamiliar to native Tatharians, drawing curious crowds from across the city. The district’s festivals, celebrating everything from harvests to ancestral traditions, are a highlight of the city’s calendar, attracting visitors from near and far.   The rapid growth of Outside has led to a number of challenges, including overcrowding, sanitation issues, and occasional tensions between its diverse communities. Despite these difficulties, the district remains a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its inhabitants. Efforts by the city’s government to improve infrastructure and provide public services continue, but the sheer density of the district poses ongoing logistical hurdles.   As Tatharia Capitolina continues to expand, Outside’s role as a gateway between the city and its surrounding territories is expected to grow. Plans for better roadways, additional public squares, and expanded markets are underway, aimed at easing congestion and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. Despite its challenges, Outside embodies the spirit of Tatharia Capitolina—a dynamic, diverse, and ever-evolving metropolis.

Demographics

Outside is primarily home to humans and halflings, who make up the majority of the district’s population. However, it is renowned for its ethnic diversity, with a growing number of foreign-born humans and non-human species. Particularly notable are the communities of beastfolk from the nearby Magical Forest, who have established unique neighborhoods within the district. Their presence has brought a wealth of cultural traditions, exotic cuisines, and lively music that have become staples of life in Outside.

Infrastructure

Outside’s layout reflects its organic growth, with winding streets and tightly packed buildings creating a labyrinthine environment. While some areas boast well-maintained roads and public squares, others are characterized by haphazard construction and narrow alleys.

Districts

The district is divided into informal neighborhoods, each with its own unique identity:
  1. Northgate Ward: The oldest part of Outside, near Northwestgate, featuring historic inns, shops, and remnants of the original settlement.
  2.
  3. Hearthside: Known for its Halfling community, Hearthside is a cozy neighborhood of low-ceilinged homes, communal gardens, and family-run eateries.
  4.
  5. Greenclaw Hollow: A vibrant beastfolk enclave, where the architecture incorporates natural elements like living trees and carved wood, reflecting traditions from the Magical Forest.
  6.
  7. Ironmarket: A bustling commercial area filled with traders, smiths, and vendors selling goods both mundane and exotic.

History

The district traces its origins to a small cluster of homes and workshops just outside Northwestgate. As Tatharia Capitolina grew, so did the demand for housing and trade, pushing development outward. Over centuries, what began as an extension of the city’s western gate transformed into a dense urban landscape, with narrow streets, multi-story dwellings, and bustling marketplaces. Today, Outside is both a residential and commercial hub, with its growth exemplifying the city’s expansionist ethos.
