Qesrir

To look at the sleepy lumber town of Qesrir, with its cheerful people and culture of hospitality, one could almost be forgiven for forgetting that less two miles to the south is probably one of the most dangerous places in the entirety of the Pāll-tanír. But one need not venture close to ila'Shar to see the effect of the ever-present threat to the people. The people of Qesrir are open to visitors because they know that it is not people they need to worry about, but the beasts of the nearby jungle.   Behind every warm smile and laughing face is a pair of eyes that has seen hardship, has seen the slaughter that results from missteps at the mills. Every hand extended in friendship, is a hand ready to jump to the hilt of the sword, seen on the hip of just about every able-bodied adult within the walls. Let not the calm deceive you, because Qesrir is ready to leap to war at a moment's notice.
Qesrir (Arventiri: /ˈkʰɛs.ɾɪɾ/) is a frontier settlement found along the southeastern coast of the Pāll-tanír. Although a modest size, the town boasts a solid stone wall that encircles its perimeter, constructed with the help of Veldrani builders who arrived in the region with the Arventiri settlers. As a port city, Qesrir is able to offset some of the economic difficulties associated with being so remote through trade with merchant vessels that are traveling up to Madras from the southeast. With direct sea access, Qesrir is also able to sell its primary export, lumber, to markets further north in the Pāll-tanír who place a premium on the goods due to the lack of large woody plants in the desert.   Despite its remoteness, Qesrir is also a popular destination for adventurers who would like to see the Shar for themselves. As the money from adventure-seeking tourists is a much-appreciated boon to the local economy, a culture of hospitality has developed within Qesrir and its closest neighboring settlements, unlike other settlements further inland which are less welcoming to strangers. Because of its proximity to the Shar, Qesrir has experienced multiple attacks from the rampaging beasts of the forest. As such, despite the friendly attitude of the town, its people are able to mobilize into a formidable militia at a moment's notice. Carrying a weapon and knowing how to effectively use it is viewed as a social and moral responsibility among the people of Qesrir.
