Gedrhun Hall

Originally known as Vidri Hall, Gedrhun Hall is the largest of the Dominion-owned buildings in Qesrir. Shortly after its construction, it was leased as a space for Qesrir's once-most-renowned physician, Gedrhun, to expand his successful medical practice. Since then, the Gedrhun Hall has switched hands. As of 357.30 NL, the building is being leased to the Qesrir Chapter of Al Zeresh Academy as its life sciences headquarters.

Purpose / Function

Gedrhun hall's purpose has changed dramatically from when it was first leased out by the local Dominion office. Built originally as a possible space for local businesses, the veldrani Gedrhun, who had been running a successful clinic nearby, decided to rent the building in order to expand his practice.

Under Gedrhun

After successfully bidding on the building, Gedrhun ran his clinical practice out of it for 30 years. At the height of Gedrhun Hall's popularity, Gedrhun not only ran a successful walk-in clinic from the front of house, but also a convalescent home and a miniature hospital with an emergency room. All in all, Gedrhun hall could service a hundred people at a time when fully-staffed. The front-of-house clinic could see six people concurrently and had space for another twelve in the waiting room. The convalescent home had space for 42 patients. There were 25 beds in the treatment wards (22 in shared rooms of two each, and three for intensive care or surgery). Further, the emergency room had a capacity of 15 people who would be seen according to a triage process.

Alterations

Harman ar'Qirim, provost of Al Zeresh Academy's Qesrir Chapter took over the lease of Gedrhun Hall after Gedrhun's practice was shut down by Dominion court order for 'substantial wrongdoing'. After clearing out medical equipment that the Qesrir Chapter had no need of, Harman supervised the transformation of Gedrhun Hall into the Qesrir Chapters' life sciences department headquarters.   The front-of-house clinic was kept in place for student healers to gain practical experience in diagnostics under the watchful eye of their masters. Three of the consultation rooms are sublet to the healers' guilds of Qesrir while one is reserved for the Cult of the White Serpent and Iarin. Ten of the 42 beds in the convalescent home were also kept for training the bedside manner of medical students. Four of the treatment wards and one of the intensive care beds were kept as well, for the benefit of medical students, while the emergency room was moved to an adjacent building.   The rest of Gedrhun Hall was refitted to hold two lecture rooms, four laboratories and offices for the life sciences department staff.

History

Shortly after the then-named Vidri Hall was completed, Gedrhun launched a successful bid to obtain the space for his clinical practice. Though at first, Gedrhun only used a part of the space near the front of house for his clinical practice, he had ambitions to expand into other areas of medicine. Shortly after securing the funds to do so, Gedrhun converted a sizable portion of the remaining space into a convalescent home where patients treated by other healers could go to recover.   From there, Gedrhun had the building's side-entrance modified in order to accommodate an emergency room that he created by carving out some of the remaining space. Once the construction on the emergency room concluded, Gedrhun secured further funding to create treatment wards in the remaining space.   For thirty years, Gedrhun ran a well-respected and well-loved medical practice out of Gedrhun Hall. Although there were a number of other healers in the city, most residents of Qesrir preferred to consult Gedrhun for everyday health-related matters. As a result, other healers decided to focus on serving the local lumber and hunting industries where injuries were common.   After working out of the same building for so long, Gedrhun's name became virtually synonymous with his place of business. In 322.30 NL, official Dominion records were updated to reflect the new name of the building and Gedrhun and his apprentices threw a feast to celebrate. The clinic experienced prosperity for a while until things began to change in Qesrir with the arrival of Iarin Tarrakos in 341.30 NL.

Winds of Change

Iarin Tarrakos arrived in Qesrir with a quiet manner entirely incongruous to the enormous splash that he and his followers made in the local medical establishment. As a relatively distant town, Qesrir was largely isolated from the medical advances that transpired elsewhere in the Dominion. Knowledgeable herbalists and individuals with a lick of divine power were considered powerful healers in the area, but none could hold a candle to Iarin and his followers who were blessed and learned in the art of healing. Injuries that would usually lead to weeks of staying in Gedrhun Hall's convalescent home were reduced to requiring only a few days. Minor illnesses that formed the bread-and-butter of Gedrhun's clinical practice became virtually nonexistent.   Though hesitant at first for reasons that would be unearthed in the aftermath, Gedrhun threw his lot in with the rest of the healers' guilds of Qesrir, applying pressure on the local government and on the Cult of the White Serpent to force them into submission for a brief time. Business started to pick up again for Gedrhun and the other healers' guilds, but everyone could sense that things had not returned to normal.   The other shoe dropped roughly half a year after Iarin arrived in Qesrir, with the Cult of the White Serpent taking the local government and the local healers' guilds to Dominion Court. Three months later, the restrictive legislation passed by the local legislature was overturned, the legislature itself was audited by Dominion officials, and the Cult of the White Serpent was given free license to practice medicine in Qesrir. Though a catastrophic blow had been dealt to the local healers' guilds, the worst was yet to come for Gedrhun and Gedrhun Hall.

The Hammer

The court case naturally brought heightened scrutiny upon the healers' guilds of Qesrir and Gedrhun and Gedrhun Hall were no exception. Though the Dominion had elected to turn a blind eye for decades because the locals were happy and Gedrhun Hall was operating in an excellent manner, no stone was left unturned by the audit that followed.   Allegations of wage fraud surfaced and were substantiated. For thirty years, Gedrhun paid his employees less than they were entitled to by Dominion law, told them that they should be grateful for the chance they had been given to treat people, save lives, and learn from a master. Further, Gedrhun reportedly threatened his employees with blacklisting should they ever make mention of conditions at Gedrhun hall.   Further, during an investigation into other healers' guilds in the area, it was discovered that Gedrhun had been illegally collecting fees from the local healers' guilds whenever they would send a patient over to Gedrhun Hall's convalescent home. This was particularly egregious as healthcare providers are prevented from taking any compensation for medical services rendered except for Dominion funding.   The case against Gedrhun was open-and-shut, with the Dominion court sentencing Gedrhun to ten years of community service and issuing a Writ of Cessation on Gedrhun's practice two months after its first hearing.

Academic Takeover

A month prior before Gedrhun's practice was shut down and the lease on Gedrhun Hall was vacated, Harman ar'Qirim had just arrived in Qesrir to establish a local chapter as part of Al Zeresh Academy's initiative to study and explore the Shār. Though he'd managed to secure lodgings as well as offices for some of the staff that came with him, the question of where to place the life sciences department remained a matter of consternation as there were no buildings sufficient to house them and sentiments were strongly against splitting the department up.   Before it became clear that Gedrhun Hall might become available for leasing, Harman was looking into having something built outright as it was within the mission's budget. Fortunately, he caught wind that Gedrhun might lose his lease and his license to practice and immediately made arrangements to take over the lease when the court case concluded. Wasting no time, Harman filed the necessary paperwork the moment that the Writ of Cessation was served at the premises of Gedrhun Hall. Within a week, the lease had been transferred to the Qesrir Branch of Al Zeresh and everything was in order for the life sciences department to move in.   By the summer of 342.30 NL, everything was in place for Al Zeresh to use Gedrhun Hall as its base of operations for its Shār exploration initiative.
