Duchy of the Dales
The Duchy of the Dales is an absolute monarchy residing wholly within the Dales of the northeast boundary of Doria. The capital of the Dales, Emberdale, is also the seat of power from which the Duke of the Dales rules this land. The lands are encompassed by the Dardunian Mountains to the east, to the south the Enares Mountains and to the east, its borders are drawn at the lower Tora and Insola rivers. The north of the Duchy stretches into the marshy upland that borders the Runic Empire, most of this area is covered in a dense forest.
The Duchy of the Dales came into being as an independent Dukedom after the founding of the Brynic Empire by Emperor Rewarhry "Knife-Tongue" who decided to split the old Kingdom of Doria into the current day entities of the Grand Duchy of Canyndor and the Duchy of the Dales. Though the people of the Grand Duchy and the Dales are very similar in terms of culture and language, the two duchies have remained separate even after the fall of the empire. However, there have been many attempts to reunify the regions, both diplomatically and by force. Notable movements behind this aim are that of the Stonecheeks and the followers of the Old Maijalan dynasty, both movements using covert and illegal means to meet their agenda.
In recent times, the Dales were invaded by the Runic Empire who while allowing Duke Urho to remain in his position of power, have largely subjugated the population for their own whims.
