Canyndor

The capital of the Grand Duchy of Canyndor, colloquially known as Doria, Canyndor is a riverside city where the main castle rises above the river banks on a large crag, the city itself wraps around the crag and hugs the riverbank of the Yarrow, its flanks bolstered by a city wall. To the north lay a series of mountains, known as the Doria Mountains wherein the surrounding lands take their name, meaning the only approach to the castle is either from the south-east valley or through the mountain paths to the south-west.   The crag upon which Canyndor sits has been a place of human settlement for as long as time has flown, being such a protectable, fertile and important trade hub it would continue to be well populated and garner influence among contemporary settlements. The precursor tribe to the overarching Doric people, the Caenans, would settle the area near Canyndor around the crag which would be the sight of pre-divinity worship. As migration and trade prospered through the eras, Canyndor grew and became the destination for those seeking prosperity within the region.   As divinity was becoming widespread within the Central Kingdoms, the crag of Canyndor which was once a place of worship for pre-divinity religions would now become a shrine to the new pantheon of gods, however over time and especially as the Era of Absolutism came into being the crag then became the home of the monarchies who would rule over an ever-expanding kingdom from Canyndor. The most prominent and successful of these monarchs was King Altti "the Silver King" who managed to expand his kingdom to include the modern border of the Grand Duchy and the Duchy of the Dales.
Canyndor is the royal seat of the Grand Duchy, though not as large and sprawling as Brondholm, not as grand and extravagant as Ardrune, Canyndor is still as worthy a seat of royalty and splendour as any other settlement in the central kingdoms. The most populous settlement within Doria, Canyndor sees trade and visitors not only from the southern provinces but from folk all over the central kingdoms looking to trade and travel.

One of the oldest yet most prominent structures upon the crag of Canyndor is that of the Lords Tower. The cloud touching tower dates back millennia, its bright white and yellow rock smooth to a near gem-like quality. It is believed it was first built by a Caenan King, even before the time of the Silver King, who had built it as a monument to both his mighty domain and the god Jala, the tall tower symbolically linking the Kings realm and that of the sky god. In modern times the tower has become but a piece of a fortress and palace mixture that dons the crag, often referred to as Canyndor Castle, much of its structures having been built upon or modified from previous ones, yet the Lord's Tower remains much in the same state as it always has.   Down in the city itself, there are many prominent sites that a newcomer will be drawn to as they wander the narrow cobbled streets and lavishly paved squares. Alter Square may well be the first destination of a visitor, with ample space to marvel at the Kirk of Jala which looms over the square, its bells tolling as the hours pass. The square sits below the castle on the crag, following round the crag, you will come to The Turns, a maze of small streets and alleyways amongst the tall buildings, as easy a place to get lost in Canyndor as there could be, and some places where you may well regret getting lost. Most are lucky, however, and will navigate the better-travelled streets of the turns and end up at the Royal Quay, here the city opens up about the river and bustling markets and merchant houses stand tall at every angle.   Just a few streets in from the Royal Quay lies the Citrine Tamella, a stadium that houses duels and other combat spectacles to entertain the populace. The Citrine Tamella is an odd merge of architecture as its base is thick stonework lined by supportive pillars of marble lined with citrine gems, as the structure grown in height, the stonework gives way to woodwork and a thatch roof that allow for easy expansion of the arena should it require extra capacity or specialised adornments.

Defences

The city of Canyndor has a large wall that surrounds the perimeter, this wall has a total of 32 towers from which defenders can protect the inhabitants from invasion. The city is position at the bank of the Yarrow and as such has several defensive towers and bastions places along the riverbanks, the South Bridge and bailey are also protected by two gatehouses either side of the river and the bridge being of a floating nature.
