Equipped with specialized drilling equipment, the team carefully extracted several core sample from leagues beneath the surface. The cylindrical cross-section revealed a grotesque yet intriguing combination of organic matter, unknown substances and eerie patterns.

Secret Discovery

At the 9th observable section, appeared to be layers of fleshy tissue, intermingled with strange, pulsating veins that seemed to throb with a dead rhythm.
Upon closer examination, the researchers found bizarre, undulating organisms entwined within the sample, suggesting an entirely new form of life that defied all known classifications.

Remembering the circumstances from which captains of the Old Fleet found the Blackford Spines, lead many on the expedition to speculate that something had fallen out of the Opal Portal before Maddox had.
And was apparently still alive, albeit now with a circular piercing stabbed right through it. There was an idea that whatever it was, was huge; possibly spanning around the entire planet like a carpet. Acting as its own boundary layer.

Also, given that a city of millions was apparently floating on its back, lead to a quiet panic among those in the know. As well as the questionable decision to keep it from the public.
