King Maffeo Rex (a.k.a. The Grand King)
The original King of the Rex Kingdom and founder of the Rex royal family.
Physical Description
Maffeo was a standard human with a beer belly that grew the longer he ruled as king. Initially, he was quite handsome and before marrying Cristina he was much sought after as much for his power as his looks.
Maffeo was an Italian American back on Earth and his skin tanned quickly working outside on Pacem. His blonde hair never extended past his ears until long after his son
Pippo Rex had been born. His bright green eyes sparkled with joy when he smiled and were stormy pools of hate when he was upset.
Maffeo had a scar above his eye from where the man he strangled had managed to get a punch to his face while he was strangling him in the throne room.
Dressed in the traditional royal color of purple as he took much of his inspiration for the kingdom from ancient Roman and Greek society.
As the king, Maffeo avoided carrying weapons and instead trusted his guards to ensure his safety. His ring with the royal symbol never left his right hand's ring finger.
Mental characteristics
Maffeo Figa was a mild-mannered community college history professor when the transportation of human to Pacem occurred. Sensing that he could achieve greatness if he acted quickly Maffeo chose to abandon his wife and child to chase after a life far greater than the one he had been living up to this point. He found this greatness when he was one of the first people to lay eyes upon the city now known as
Earth. Heeding the cloaked figures warning but seeing an incredible opportunity he dashed for the throne room. Another man was there before he arrived but Maffeo grabbed the man by his throat and viciously strangled him to ensure he was the first to claim the throne. After ensuring he was seen claiming the throne he declared himself king of the city and claimed his name was Maffeo Rex. Taking inspiration from the Latin word for a ruler.
Maffeo ruled fairly during his short 34-year rule. He was regarded as a passionate leader who did his best to ensure that the lives of his subjects were safe and comfortable. His most famous achievement was the complete mapping of the world of Pacem. With this knowledge, he expanded the
Rex Kingdom to its current size. Maffeo also oversaw the war that came to be known as
The Rebellion of King Tyre. Commanding an underprepared and underequipped force to victory after Maffeo established a strong military tradition for the
Rex Kingdom. Maffeo was able to effectively secure the power of the crown while also inspiring a generation of
Rexiots to join the military and swear their allegiance to the king.
In his later years, Maffeo came to regret the way he handled his initial family and set about to try to find them. He was not successful and carried this burden in his heart until he finally passed at the age of 74.
Maffeo was well-educated but fell into a rut when he couldn't find a job after graduating college. He parlayed some connections into being a community college professor where he worked until the transposition. While serving as king he hired the best advisors he could find, caring little for what role they served in back on original Earth. He extended this high level of academic rigor to his son
Pippo Rex.
On Earth
Served as a community college professor of history.
On Pacem
Crowned as the king of the
Rex Kingdom.
Abandoning his family haunted Maffeo nightly and later in his life he often actively avoided sleeping if possible to avoid having to dream of his former wife and child. He was the ruling king while over 4 billion humans died due to being unable to adapt to a world without technology.
Maffeo didn't trust anyone to do a job as well as he would and the kingdom took far too long to act on events. This is part of the reason that the rebellion was able to form as it did.
Maffeo's decisions in his younger life allowed him to become king, but he carried a burden of extreme guilt throughout the rest of his life. Realizing that all humans were capable of the same horrible acts that he committed to his family caused an extreme distrust of humanity to develop in his psyche. Because of this, he would often favor loyalty over all other attributes, often to his own detriment.
A lover of history Maffeo sought out any way to learn the history of the world that humanity had been transported to. He also was a risk-taker if he felt the payoffs were worth the risk.
In his younger years, he valued himself above all others to his own benefit by becoming king. As he matured he realized he had lost a part of his soul by being so selfish and he sought to make amends by taking care of his subjects as best he could. He also valued loyalty above all things and promoted those who were loyal to him ahead of those who merited promotion leading to resentment within the army.
Would never speak of his former family and cut the tongue out of anyone who attempted to blackmail him with this information.
Personality Characteristics
In his youth, he wanted to be a famous writer, when the chance for him to claim fame as a king arose he seized the chance with both hands. As he matured he wanted to ensure that the kingdom his son inherited was one that he would be proud to be the ruler of.
Liked being compared to famous kings from Earth's history.
Hated speaking of his former life before he became king.
Was able to weigh the pros and cons of a decision in his head almost perfectly before deciding on a course of action. Earnestly cared for every citizen in his kingdom.
Quick to anger and made rash decisions when he felt he had been slighted.
Social
He was always on the lookout for some guidance as to what being or force had brought humanity from Earth. Finding none he assumed they had been cursed by God and in his tomb, he is buried holding a cross.
Initially, he was a stilted speaker when addressing crowds but within years he had perfected his kingly appearance and was often regarded as one of the most charismatic men in the kingdom.
Often felt like he was faking being a king so he would use longer words to appear smarter than he felt. As he progressed in his reign he found his groove for ruling and declared
Everything I do is what a king does
.
History
Maffeo lived a bachelor's life until he was struck by the beauty of Cristina Fonte. Using all of the resources at his disposal to woo her away from a host of other suitors he was eventually rewarded with her hand in marriage. Together she helped to smooth some of the king's more radical ideas as well as push him to solidify the authority of the crown for the future of their children and grandchildren.
Nicknames & Petnames
Queen Cristina was known to teasingly call him "King ma" when he was in an irritable mood.
Relationship Reasoning
The King needed a queen and she was the woman who stole his heart. The queen used her status to ensure her family was well cared for and eventually found herself madly in love with the moody king of The Rex Kingdom.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Both of them thoroughly enjoyed statecraft and the intricacies of hosting balls, parties, and diplomatic missions thrilled them. Often times servants would hear whispering deep into the night only to discover it was the King and Queen making seating arrangements for the guests coming to a banquet.
Shared Secrets
Maffeo trusted Cristina with the totality of his rule, he never shared the past of how he came to be king, or how he came to be a single man. Cristina was smart enough to know what information to pry about and she was content to ensure that her husband operated as effectively as possible while ruling with her support.
Shared Acquaintances
The King and Queen operated as a pair and everyone who met one met the other shortly thereafter.
Legal Status
Married
As a king, Maffeo was frugal with the treasury both because it was low and because the people were yet to fully accept him as their leader. He ran the kingdom at a deficit for the majority of his time ruling to maintain the peace. Once the new generation began to accept his rule as absolute he was able to pour more funds back into improving the lives of the common folk.
