Citadel
Throne of the Rex Royal Family
The Citadel is a labyrinth that is both the home of the Rex royal family and the center for all political actions that occur in The Rex Kingdom. It houses the Royal Guard, provides an area for political discourse, intrigue, and diplomatic events. There are dozens of rooms that have only been seen by the royal family or haven't been entered at all. The crawling expanse of the Citadel is often rumored to hold all manner of horrors within its walls but so far it has proven to be an ideal arena from which to rule from and to be protected both from foreigner invaders and domestic prying eyes and ears alike.
Purpose / Function
Standing highest among a city already sprawling with tall buildings the Citadel is imposing both from a physical and mental standpoint. Foreign dignitaries and merchants often remark how nervous they get when approaching the throne of The Rex Kingdom. Housing such varied purposes as hosting diplomatic operations, war strategy, political intrigue, and the royal family there is always something happening within the Citadel's walls. Who or what originally inhabited this building is a question that many ponder but few investigate and even fewer have any leads as to what it could have been.
Alterations
A large throne has been installed in the center courtyard. Flanked by trees and a natural pond this area offers an inviting location for business or political decisions to be made. The original throne was destroyed by Maffeo Rex after he claimed it was not the right style for a king to rule from.
Architecture

The swirling domes make you feel like you're living above the clouds. I swear I've never seen ceilings so high. And the trees! The trees everywhere that tie us back to the ground. I feel like this could be out of the Ottoman empire of old if it wasn't sitting in the middle of a brand new world! Oh Maffeo, can we explore this idyllic escape together forever?
The stone of the Citadel is strong enough that any major renovation efforts were abandoned before they had a chance to begin. The servants spend much of their time replacing torches to illuminate some of the most thoroughly used corridors, but much of the Citadel is open-air allowing sunlight to flow into the building. At the same time, it is obviously a military fortress with slitted windows, winding staircases leading to choke points, and exposed courtyards flanked by towers that could hold a dozen archers. Nature has crept into the Citadel as well and trees dot the walls where the river has been a plentiful source of fuel.
History
The humans that discovered the Citadel were told that the first to claim the throne would be the king of the city. Maffeo Rex won this race and founded The Rex Kingdom in the aftermath. Unfortunately, any knowledge pre-dating that founding event is simply educated guesses or superstition. Though a few scholars are being funded by the crown to attempt to unearth some clue as to what purpose this great building served before it was abandoned.
