Theory of Wings

Background

The Theory of Wings is one of the two major schools of thought within the Terror, the primary sapient species of Triumph. The other being the Theory of Claws.
Both theories are ways the Terror use to explain how, while they are similar to other birds on Triump in that they have wings, they are different in that they cannot fly.

Beliefs

The Theory of Wings states that as a descendent of birds, and as a species born with wings, the Terror were meant to fly. Not being able to fly is a great shame, and those non-sapient birds which can fly are to be admired and imitated as far as is possible.
Their motto, 'Soaring High', is both their attitude to their physicality in that they spend as much time gliding as they can, and their attitude to life in their idealisation of dreaming and always looking for improvements.

Members

Most members are tied to their opinion but live life otherwise unencumbered by it. However, there are sub-factions who are more vocal and active in their engagement with the issue.
One of the most vocal groups within the Theory of Wings is the Soarers, who are also a food chain. They advocate for the Theory of Wings by creating restaurants which can only be reached by customers gliding from a higher vantage point. They are regularly protested by ToC Advocates, a highly active group who follow the Theory of Claws, but take it all with good humour.

History

The arrival of Peacekeepers on Triumph saw a major drop in Terror believing in the Theory of Wings. This appearance of a sapient species who walked proudly on two legs and made no attempts to fly was groundbreaking to the Terror. Before the Peacekeepers' arrival, their numbers were high, around 73% of the population, with people spending time finding ways to glide as much as they could. By the time Triumph was fully initiated, the Theory of Claws took over as the majority and now averages between 69% - 78% of the population in any given year.

Impact

The Theory of Wings may be considered a theory but it is also the basis of one of the two major political parties on Triumph.
It is recognised across Triumph that everyone is an individual and has their own mind. As such, for the most part, people who follow the Theory of Wings (also known as Wingers) and people who follow the Theory of Claws (also known as Clawers), live happily side by side, willing to agree to disagree.
