Nvos, Capital City of Celebrate

"I've said it before and I have no doubt I'll say it again, if the Clebveth weren't so backwards, this planet might be more impressive.   On arriving in Nvos, I mentioned this witty observation to my guide, thinking he would find it amusing. Most do. I am known by my friends (and dear readers) as something of a humourist. Although he was clearly Pachian, the man looked at me and shook his head. 'No, Sir,' he said. 'They are so backwards it is impressive they achieved even this.'   I cannot say I am in complete agreement. Surely some kind of teleportation system wouldn't be beyond them. All this walking and climbing is very tiresome."

Geography

Nvos is the Capital City of Celebrate, which sits within The Victalis System and is part of the Peacekeeper Territories. It is one of the five habitable planets within the system and is the second of these planets from the sun which is known as Victal.   The city is built into a canyon known in the local dialect as "Cliffs Where The Worlds Meet", which runs close to the equator of Celebrate. A river known as the "River Which Brings Forth" runs down the centre of this canyon, providing the city with fresh water.

Climate

Being on the equator of Celebrate, Nvos is varying shades of hot and warm all year round. This is perhaps why the Clebveth chose to build in the canyon, where there is ample shade and the river provides water throughout the seasons.   On the flatlands around the canyon, the temperature varies from highs of around 41°C (106°F) in the hottest months to lows of around 1°C (34°F) in the coldest. Inside the canyon, however, there is less variance, with highs reaching a more reasonable 31°C (88°F) in the hottest times of the year, and lows of around 12°C (54°F) in the coldest.

The Nvoth, inhabitants of Nvos, are predominantly Clebveth, as this has historically been a Clebveth settlement.   The Clebveth are quite a spiritual group by nature. Even those who aren't part of one of the sects or monasteries will follow one or more of the five major Clebveth religious orders. They have a tendency to be overwhelmed and find things extremely stressful, which impacts their body quickly and can cause death. They find solace in religion as a way of dealing with those anxieties.

Government

The primary source of government in Nvos is Celebrate Command who report to Victalis Command which in turn reports to Peacekeeper Command. Celebrate Command is more concerned with the running of the entire planet, and representing the Clebveth people within the Peacekeeper Alliance.   A lot of the running of the city itself comes from a board which includes the current Spirit Light in the Temple of Keys, a representative for trade and a representative for people. Of these three, the latter two are elected by businesses and people respectively every three to seven years. This board convenes twice every ten days, one private day-long session and one public half-day session, where decisions from the private session are presented and agreed upon. Both public and private meetings may also be called in the case of an emergency.

Guilds & Factions

The major groups within Nvos are based around the five spirits within Clebveth Pantheon. The largest group is, obviously, the one following Karav, as the Temple of Keys is dedicated to this spirit.

Districts

Within Nvos there are five districts, two on the southern wall one above the other, two on the northern wall also one above the other and the Temple of Keys which runs across the base of the canyon.   Each of the districts was originally its own village and they have grown together over time. So there is not a dedicated "industry" or "retail" district. However, each of the districts does have its own feel.

Southern Wall

Tanath

More touristy than most areas. Lowest % of Clebveth

Cavos

Somewhat artisanal sensibilities. Has a good market.

Northern Wall

Narath

Most densely populated area. Near the Space Port.

Tattanth

Home to the library and where the city's board meets.

Temple

The religious epicentre of the city. The Temple sprawls across either side of the river and deep into the mountain.

Industry & Trade

The two biggest exports of Nvos are tourism and religious artefacts. A lot of the paraphernalia used by Clebveth to worship the Clebveth Pantheon, such as Temporal Bindings and Blessed Nipple Ring are made inside the Temple of Keys.   In addition, there is a health food and agricultural industry, which it uses to trade with settlements across the flatlands.

Tourism

Tourism in Nvos is a large part of the city's industry, as it is the capital of Celebrate and the nearest city to the largest of the two spaceports on the planet. There are some who come to Nvos for the activities which are available, including cliff diving and other high-adrenaline sports which have been created specifically for tourists as no Clebveth would be able to bear such a thing.   However, most tourists who come to Nvos do so to marvel at the Temple, in part for its architecture, but mainly because religion is such a foreign concept to them. The Clebveth are one of the only species who were able to hold on to their religion when they joined The Alliance, and as such the chance to see a religious structure which is still active is a large draw.

History

The "Cliffs Where The Worlds Meet", where Nvos is built, was named after a myth about a "world" crashing into the side of a mountain, and forming the canyon. There is no mountain now, just flatlands on either side, and there are myths explaining that as well.   The city itself was originally a trading post, back when the quickest way of transporting goods down the side of the cliffs was by a carefully constructed pulley system. The "River Which Brings Forth" was used as a transportation system for carrying goods to other settlements.   It was also where the Peacekeepers first landed, in 3883 PT, and where the treaty with them was signed 150 years later, in 3933 PT. As a result, they were the first to receive the drug Neurotheris as part of this treaty and were by far the worst hit by the Neurotheris Addiction epidemic which followed. At its peak, Nvos was home to more than 260,000 Clebveth, but within five years the city had dwindled to fewer than 55,000 people. Despite some efforts on the part of the Peacekeepers, the population numbers have never recovered.

Points of Interest

Temple of Keys

Temple
The Temple of Keys is dedicated to the Spirit Karav, the Spirit of Building and Rebuilding, who the Clebveth connect to through body piercing. Connection ceremonies are held there regularly and it is also possible to visit the workshops where some of the bone, metal and ceramic items that followers of Karav choose to pierce themselves with are made.

Keys Ossuary

Temple
Deep inside the Temple of Keys, lies the Keys Ossuary, an extremely sacred place which is closely guarded by members of the temple who devote their lives to the task. Visitors are not allowed to step beyond the entryway, but still, it is a magnificent sight. The bones used to elaborately decorate this place are all donated to the temple.

Cavos Market

Cavos
Each of the districts in Nvos has its own market, but there is no doubt that Cavos Market is the most brightly coloured, varied and popular. Its popularity stretches to both tourists and locals who are searching for something unique, and people should come prepared to barter and trade for what they want, although tourists should expect to be charged extra.

The Flatlands

Outside the City
The Flatlands which lie to the south of the city are very popular with tourists for the large variety of sports and activities which are available. There are ziplines and cliff jumps through empty parts of the canyon beyond the city limits, as well as high-speed sand surfing and even sky surfing. Tourists are advised to partake in such activities at their own peril.

Architecture

Nvos is built almost entirely into the cliffs of the canyon, with some additions added to the outside in stone which has been removed from deeper in the rock. Despite the Peacekeepers' attempts to modernise, the style is still very traditional Clebvethian, with a large amount of greenery scattered across the outsides of the buildings.   Inside the cliffs, mosses and lichens grow across the walls and ceilings and through the rooms, creating a feel of being inside a jungle. The city is a warren of staircases and tunnels and can be quite difficult to navigate.   There are also still old-fashioned pulley systems, both inside and outside, which can be used to move up and down the city. Modern teleportation disks are also available.

The temperatures in the canyon are so much friendlier than in the flatlands, omg. Clever Clebveth.   Sounds like it would be a fun place to explore. I would love a peek into the ossuary.
