Seraph Species in Orion's Echo | World Anvil

Seraph

Among the oddest of the human diasporic subspecies are the seraphim of the planet Apollo. Infrequently called avariel, these distant relatives of the elves have been engineered for limited flight capability.

Biology

Anatomy & Morphology

Seraphim are similar to true humans in some respects, though they mostly take after their elven ancestors. Their skin is very dark and their irises are dark violet to protect against the high solar radiation Apollo is subject to. The most notable feature of seraphim, however, are their enormous, feathered wings. As the only human subspecies (and therefore mammal) with six limbs, their muscle and bone structure is significantly different to that of standard humans. Hollow bones reinforced with natural carbon fibre and interior struts, as well as dramatically enhanced upper body strength and cardiovascular efficiency, allow them limited bursts of powered flight and considerable gliding range.

Perception & Sensory Capabilities

Seraphim rarely have the psionic abilities of their elven relatives, but it is not unheard of for some to manifest limited telepathy or telekinesis. However, this typically comes at the cost of flight - psionic power is metabolically expensive. All avariel, though, can see into the ultraviolet wavelengths; an advantage in the harsh sunlight of Apollo.

Geographic Origin & Distribution

The seraph subspecies of human originated on the planet Apollo, in the Olympia star system. They are slightly less common than true humans.

Ultraviolet Vision
You can see into the UV spectrum, revealing colors and patterns most other humans cannot see or describe. Your Perception skill is naturally increased by 1.
Glide
Though your wings aren’t especially functional, you are still aerodynamic. You have a flying speed of 40 feet. You suffer no damage from falling so long as you are conscious. When falling from a height of 30 feet or more, you may move horizontally as normal using your speed.
