Nereid
Triton
A later generation of the human diaspora, nereids are highly derived from the original human physiology. Long ago, the settlers of ocean moon Triton genetically modified themselves to better match their new homeworld. Nereids are able to absorb oxygen from seawater through re-evolved gills in their necks as well as take in air directly to their lungs, and have symbiotic relationships with subdermal algae, granting their skin a greenish hue.
Biology
Anatomy & Morphology
Tritons are similar to true humans in body plan and internal anatomy, though they differ from unaltered humans in a few key respects. Most notably, they have neotenically-derived gills in their necks which allow them to breathe in properly-oxygenated water. Nereids are also better equipped for underwater vision, able to see into the ultraviolet and under low light conditions, and possess slightly webbed extremities for added hydrodynamicity. Additionally, their skin inherits a green or greenish-blue tone from the symbiotic algae found just under the outer epidermis. Their noses are underdeveloped, however, and remain closed underwater by specially-evolved cartilage flaps.Ecology
Geographic Origin & Distribution
The nereid subspecies of human originated on the planet Triton, one of the moons of the planet Poseidon in the Olympia star system. They are moderately less common than true humans.Civilization & Culture
The people of Triton form a regal civilization with great appreciation for the arts. However, the basis of nereid society is aquaculture, which comes in a variety of forms ranging from fish farming to the production of algae biofuel.Major Organizations
