Skoura

The Black Wyrm

Skoura was a white dragon and a Marked of Yog. She was a player character in All Hail Yog, portrayed by Megan Captaine.
“She draws the eye, this dragon. As black as midnight from horned snout to tip of tail, she has the coloring of a southern swamp dragon but the frosty chill that seems to cling to her scales and especially her breath betrays her northern heritage. She is a fearsome predator even at a glance – her maw full of sharp teeth, her claws curved like scimitars, her wings lean and hawkish. Neither can her size be ignored, twice as tall as a human at the shoulder and over three times in length; she is a walking siege engine. She regards you with a keen intelligence devoid from the eyes of lesser beasts and a sorcerous symbol shimmers in her one pupil.”

History

Like all dragons, Skoura remembers nothing about her life before her dracomorphosis; she simply awoke amidst her hoard, sealed away in the icy depths of Diamos. Something must’ve gone awry with her transformation, however, for when she emerged from her hibernation, she was coal-black, rather than the traditional snow-white of the northern wyrms. This drew aggression and prejudice from the other icy drakes and, before she could truly stake a territory in the north, she was driven from Diamos and forced to flee into Rubicos.   There, she briefly partnered with a conclave of dwarves, looking for protection against monsters and rival miners. This relationship did not last long, however, for she accidentally collapsed their mine. Lost and forced to wander the frigid regions of the world, she was approached by Yog, who sought additional firepower in Its attempt to conquer Thorp.

Character

Personality

Like all her kind, Skoura is a hunter first, a dragon second. White dragons are known for their voracious appetites and Skoura is no different. Her mind is always on her next meal. A loner and isolationist, Skoura is uncomfortable around other creatures, especially humanoids. She very rarely, if ever, actually speaks, preferring to communicate in roars, huffs and growls. Skoura also has a great love of pure destruction, of throwing her weight around and watching the lesser creatures driven before her.

Abilities

Like all dragons, Skoura is a titan of battle; heavily armored in thick scale, she comes equipped with claws and teeth capable of rending steel. She is especially quick on the wing as well and can swim nearly as fast as she can move overland. In addition, her black coloring makes her oddly stealthy in the proper conditions – at night or underwater Her mere presence can also frighten even the stout-hearted.   Like all white dragons, she can breath a cone of freezing ice, her deadliest weapon by far.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog

  • The Watchtower: Skoura was one of the four Marked of Yog tasked with conquering the Gatehouse protecting the Bay of Thorp. Snatched in the middle of her meal, she sprayed whale carcass all over the Spires of Yog upon her arrival. The first time she was ever summoned, Skoura asked few questions of Yog and, when teleported to Tzal Umbros, attempted – unsuccessfully – to make a meal of a tiefling peddler. Skoura spent most of the voyage to Thorp catching and eating marine life and ignoring the strategy sessions her companions conducted. Skoura accompanied the scouting mission – primarily as transportation – around the rocky island. When the rest of her companions went ashore in disguise, she lurked in the water behind them, unnoticed by the elven sentries. When the plan went sideways, she burst from the water and strafed the first tower she saw. Then she encountered two members of the Soulsworn – Liamee and Dortek – and quickly overextended herself as the invasion commenced around her. Healed by Ernst, she winged her way to the watchtower, scooping up Liamee’s amulet on the way. Joined by the gargoyle at the tower’s summit, she dispatched the few guards with ease and, after much struggle, shoved the enormous beacon over the edge of the tower and so dispelled the magical chain protecting the harbor. Swooping down to throw herself into the final fracas with the Soulsworn, she frightened with, breathed ice down upon them and eventually devoured both the fleeing Zojan and even his steed. When summoned back to the Spires, however, Skoura realized that they’d specifically been instructed to spare the chain. For her disobedience, Skoura was banished in a gout of green flame, her fate unknown.
  • The Covenant: For years between her first assignments, Skoura was punished by Yog for her failure. She was tasked to haul the brazier up from the Bay of Thorp and, to further complicate matters, her wing was severed. When, after two years of failure and anguish, she finally succeeded, she was met by another team of Marked, ready to embark on another assignment. Promised a new wing made by Dr. Hughbert, she attempted to ignite the brazier to impress Yog but the Vessel couldn’t have cared less, tossing the brazier back into the sea. In the slaughterhouse, Skoura was the recipient of the Doctor’s latest mad science, a new mechanical wing grafted onto her stump. On her new mechanical wing, Skoura scoured the city of Thorp, charting the route the villains would take to the Quorum. Otherwise, she passed her time devouring as much stock as she could, nearly impoverishing Shim and his family in the process. On the morning of the attack, Skoura – with Alizabeth on her back – awaited Desdemonia's signal before taking to the sky. Spotted on her approach, she nonetheless crashed the skylight and plunged towards the panicked dignitaries, jaws open, ready to bite. As she descended, she was quite nearly turned to stone by Archmage Qelerei, saved only by the timely invention of Yog. Once she landed, she laid into the Covenant leadership with tooth and claw. Her first target was none other than the eladrin archmage himself. With one powerful swipe of her claw, she destroyed Qelerei, only to discover him nothing more than a simulacrum. When Ydra summoned a stone golem to surround her, Skoura gave chase, hounding the dwarven queen every step of the way. Frustrated by her attempts to pierce the stony armor, Skoura eventually resorted to her breath weapon, which succeeded in finally destroying the elemental armor. When Desdemonia stole her kill, Skoura turned the remainder of her ice on the Unsung Heroes, freezing them all where they stood. Once it came time to make their escape, Skoura carried Azathomet's sarcophagus over the city. Back atop the Gatehouse, a trembling Skoura presented Yog with Qelerei’s crown and, while punished for her failure, was sentenced to neither torture nor hard labor.
  • The Heroes: Skoura was one of the four villains summoned by Yog to the Spires of Yog in the heart of Yogoth. Pulled from a well-deserved vacation, Skoura was within the tower when the pillar of radiant sunlight struck the spire and it began to collapse. Carrying Ernst and Xosh to safety, Skoura reluctantly flew back into the tower, in a failed attempt to rescue the Vessel and was promptly crushed beneath the tower’s immense weight. Believed to be slain, it was Ernst who rescued her but not before the Soulswon teleported away with the Vessel in tow. Fighting furiously, she slashed and bit Zojan but paused a moment to shade poor Azathomet from exposure to the sunlight. Retreating into his coffin, the vampire landed unscathed but his sarcophagus was destroyed. Shading Azathomet with her wing, Skoura accompanied her companions into the First Fissure. Unlike her undead allies, she managed to follow Xosh and, upon discovering Yog’s absence, she briefly returned to the Spires of Yog to seek directions. Arriving at the Houses of Torment, she slunk her way through the familiar halls, recalling months and months of grievous torture. Roaring at both the mad former Vessel and Neogi failed to produce the effect she wanted and, in the end, she leapt into the fissure with her companions, racing to the defense of Tzal Necros.
