Erick Idylvain

The Abomination

Erick Idylvain was a human abomination and a Marked of Yog. He was a player character in All Hail Yog, portrayed by Paul Vonasek.
“This scarecrow of a man refuses to meet your eye. He carries himself like a beggar, hunched forward, rubbing his hands nervously, always muttering quietly to himself. He’s dressed in tattered vestments, torn at the sleeves and chewed at the legs, but any symbol or emblem of their previous faith is long worn away. Like a monk, the sides of his head are clean shaven, leaving only a tuft of unruly hair atop his head. With his thumb, he constantly traces and retraces a scar or a brand or something on the palm of his hand.”

History

A member of a heretical cult, Erick and his people were chased, hither and yon, around the continent of Rubicos, hunted from place to place. His was a besieged, nomadic life, always fearful that they and their small religion would be discovered by the local populace and driven into the wilderness. All that while, no matter how long he prayed for strength to protect his flock, Erick’s divinity never replied, never answered his prayers.   But Yog did.   Desperate to wield the strength necessary to drive away his enemies, Erick made a pact with the Black Star and, in return for pledging his fealty, transformed Erick into a monstrous gargoyle. Now the Mark of Yog, branded onto his palm, is the key to his transformation and Erick, overawed by this actual display of power, devoted his life to Yog wholly and completely.

Character

Personality

Running, hiding, begging for mercy – this was Erick’s whole life before his pact with Yog and they have made him an obsequious, subservient man. He is filled with fear – particularly of Yog and Its potential displeasure – and will do everything in his power to keep Yog pleased with him. It is power that Erick respects and Yog’s power, though demonic, is the only one that’s ever manifested for him. As such, he is loves and worships and fears Yog before all.

Abilities

As a human, Erick’s abilities are limited. He has a knack for many skills but has mastered few of them. Stealthy and furtive, he’s a survivor and is most adept at escaping various types of danger   The gargoyle is an engine of destruction. Its stony hide can blunt anything but enchanted blades. Its teeth and claws are razor-sharp, shredding flesh and armor like paper. Its great wings whisk the creature about at tremendous speed and the Mark on its palm is capable of hurling gouts of blistering green flame at its enemies. In order to maintain this monstrous appearance, however, the gargoyle’s bloodlust must be satiated, less he revert to his puny mortal form.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog

  • The Child: Erick was among the four Marked tasked with kidnapping Princess Nimria from the wood elven kingdom of Cymbia. After slaughtering an angry mob, he appeared – along with his fellow champions – before the Vessel in the Spires of Yog. Hunched and subservient, Erick agreed the most readily to each of Yog’s demands and was the first to throw himself into the Fissure. Drawn immediately to Desdemonia, he seeks ever to please both her and their mutual dark master and so is the first to volunteer to guide the villains through the forest, though his insecurity inevitably fumbles this too. Once the party reached Vaer Quethrolas, Erick struggles to reach the arboreal palace, leaping from tree to tree but always falling short. Aided by Agnoment, he reaches the Court Tree and undergoes his terrible transformation into the gargoyle. During the battle, he carves a bloody path through the elven defenses, slaughtering guards left and right – and Desdemonia is immediately smitten with him – until the elves fall back into the Bastion Tree and he reverts back to Erick, at which point she loses all interest again. During the final battle, Erick once again adopts his gargoyle form to battle the ironwood tree in the palace nursery. His infernal flame is blunted by the tree’s metallic bark and, when this fails, so too does his gargoyle form. As ineffectual Erick, he tries and fails to impress Desdemonia, throwing himself and his meager dagger at both ironwood tree and Queen Sionne, before falling back and fleeing with his comrades. After the mission, he is full of dread and remorse, horrified by the things he’s just done.
