Azathomet

The First

Azathomet was a vampire lord and the first Marked of Yog. He is a player character in All Hail Yog, portrayed by Steven Molony.

"When the lid lifts away, the creature revealed within the sarcophagus is far more loathsome than you anticipated. Sallow skin, pale as a grub's, is tight across quite visible bones in places, bunched oddly in others. Eyes, sunken but lambent, gaze out from that ghastly visage. At the ends of spidery fingers grow nails as curved and cruel as claws. Tattered cloth clings to its waist and around its neck it wears a crude amulet, depicting a symbol forgotten by aeons. When it opens its mouth to hiss, you see the extent of its fangs – flared and too numerous and thirsty for blood."
History

The very first Marked of Yog, Azathomet’s true history is lost to the ages. It is whispered that he was an instrumental catalyst in the Night Wars that ended the First Age and plunged half of Ondûn into chaos but that is little more than idle rumor. What is known is that Azathomet was once a man of Thanatos, in an ancient epoch, and that Yog granted him the power of vampirism in exchange for his servitude.   From Azathomet, all vampirism flowed. He was the first, the progenitor and all modern vampires owe him a debt. While his immediate brood died millenia ago, he is nonetheless revered in Thanatos and entombed in honor. Nearly 4,000 years old, Azathomet rarely leaves his sacred sepulcher beneath Isarakarasi; regular tribute is paid to him in the form of blood sacrifice and it is on this lifeblood that he sustains himself. Only at Yog’s summons does he bestir himself.

Character

Personality

Malevolent as he is, Azathomet is motivated by nothing so much as lethargy. As ancient as empires, the vampire lord takes little pleasure in anything but blood and torpor. He exerts himself only rarely and only to the extent necessary to accomplish his goal. When fully sated on blood, however, he can enter spells of frenzy, shedding all discretion and reveling in slaughter. Whatever manner of man he once was, he’s long forgotten – now he is purely a creature of thirst and sleep.

Abilities

As a vampire, all Azathomet’s supernatural abilities stem from his thirst for blood. When fully sated, he is truly a force to be reckoned with. His flesh is proof against all but silvered weapons. He can charm the unwary with a glance. He can summon children of the night – bats, wolves and rats – to his side and, a shapechanger, he can assume their forms as well. He has mastery over shadows, capable of appearing and disappearing on a whim. His claws and teeth are fearsome weapons in their own right and he can scamper up sheer surfaces like a spider.   As a vampire, however, he is bound by a number of debilitating weaknesses, including forbiddance, running water, wooden stakes and sunlight most of all. He is also tied inexorably to his sacrophagus and, were that to be destroyed, he would have nowhere to respawn.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog

  • The Covenant: Azathomet was one of the four villains summoned by Yog to the conquered Gatehouse in Borson 897. Pulled from his torpor in Thanatos, Azathomet was unfamiliar with the distant coastline of Thorp and threatened Desdemonia when she probed his sarcophagus too closely. Upon arriving at the slaughterhouse, he demanded regular feedings from Shim, their cowed host, and bungled an interrogation attempt to learn much information about the Quorum. For the next several days, Azathomet fed on Shim and his family and occasionally stalked the streets with Desdemonia in tow. On the eve of the attack, the vampire slunk into the Quorum in his gaseous form and took refuge in a broom closet down below. Once inside, he awaited the dawn for his attack. When he heard the sounds of battle above, he summoned a flock of bats and raced upstairs, appearing the shadow beneath the table to attack the Lord Mayor. Azathomet fought fiercely during the battle. He drank the Lord Mayor’s blood until Alizabeth crushed his head to a pulp. The unsilvered bullets and bayonets of the Unsung Heroes were less than effective against him. He charmed Queen Sionne and commanded her to fall upon her sword and, when the attempt failed, he drank her blood as Desdemonia dispatched him. After a brief bout of blood frenzy, he transformed into a bat to escape the Quorum before reinforcements could arrive. Upon discovering that they failed to kill Archmage Qelerei, he nearly killed Shim in his rage. Carried in his sarcophagus by Skoura, he fled the city and reported back to a displeased Yog.
  • The Heroes: Azathomet was one of the four villains summoned by Yog to the Spires of Yog in the heart of Yogoth. Pulled from a mission to assassinate the marquess, Azathomet was within the tower when the pillar of radiant sunlight struck the spire and it began to collapse. Retreating into his coffin, the vampire landed unscathed but his sarcophagus was destroyed. When Soulsworn appeared and made off with the Vessel, Azathomet was severely hindered by the sunlight, summoning wolves and slashing ineffectually at Dortek. Sheltering beneath Skoura’s wing, Azathomet came to the paling conclusion that, his coffin destroyed, he had nowhere to coalesce. After a brief argument with Neogi, the vampire joined his companions in the First Fissure but, due to Yog’s absence, was whisked away to the Tarask Wastes. He eventually rejoined Skoura at the Houses of Torment, met Zyzzenxkys and drank a little blood from a hapless halfling prisoner. When Ernst arrived, the lich delivered him a new coffin and the two shared a moment amidst the screaming prisoners. Arguing with Neogi again, by way of an enchanted severed head, Azathomet leapt into the Fissure to confront the Soulsworn but was whisked to the Houses of Temptation instead.
